Re: ADS-B Install Experience
Hi,
Peter,
all and all was $11K (transponder part alone was $5K+ ).
Rob,
Yes, it was getting dimmer. If the sun was shining on it, I literally had to bend and get close to it to see what it shows. The PFD is fine and bright and there is nothing wrong with it, but now I see a difference between new MFD and the original PFD. The MFD is just super crisp.

Re: ADS-B Install Experience
I have a 2006 DA42 and I have a hard time seeing my MFD screen. How much did it cost to replace your screens? Was that included in the $11k?

Re: ADS-B Install Experience
Thank you Yuri.
This conversation makes me wonder if Garmin changed the screen technology somewhere around 40.800. I only have ~500 hours or so on my screens but they are bring even in the full sun. I have a small problem running the other way; I can't get them dim enough to suit my tastes when flying at night.

Re: ADS-B Install Experience
Yes, $11K included everything - transponder, screen, wires, labor, taxes.
You know, this is possible, that Garmin did something to their screens at some point. The original PFD is bright, but it does not look like a mirror. The MFD does look like a mirror. No glare or anything like that, so don't get me wrong. I have not flown at night yet, so don't know what it will be.

Re: G1000 screen replacements
I replaced both of my screens (2004 aircraft) earlier this year by sending the existing units in for overhaul. Pulled all the knobs before returning them. They both came back like new but it did take 2+ weeks. I don't know if they are better than when new, but they look awfully nice now.

Re: ADS-B Install Experience
You're welcome!
What do I mean by that? Well, since I (and increasingly more owners) are equipping with ADS-B out you get to see us as traffic on your ADS-B in dual-band device, whether or not you are ADS-B out. What's more, if I'm close enough to matter and you don't yet have ADS-B out you'll get to see non-ADS-B Mode C traffic from TIS-B if in the right airspace (which is most of US).

Could you tell me how much did it cost to overhaul both GDU (display) unit?
Also, what do you mean by "Pulled all the knobs before returning them"?
Did you have to re-calibrate the fuel tank config, etc?
Sorry for many questions... but I'm interested in.

Re: ADS-B Install Experience
The units were $1600 each plus labor. I've had to replace knobs before due to use & they are expensive. Can only get them as a set even if you only need one. Replacement units come with all new knobs so I pulled the old knobs before sending them in so I would have spares.

Re: ADS-B Install Experience
I have a spare screen. PM me if you are interested in spending less than the $1,600. (From a 2007 DA42.)
