FYI. the KAP-140 has a FAULT log. The failure codes should be listed. You can make your own harness and use a laptop in terminal mode to retrieve the codes.

Also there is no mention above if the P or R lights were illuminated. How did your autopilot react to the self test? I'm having issues with mine that seem to be intermittent. I have the harness but I'm an Apple computer guy so I haven't figured out how to connect with my laptop yet.

Here is a picture. You'll see that there isn't a 'fault' indicated on the display. My understanding is that the dashed lines represent a lack of available modes (either vertical or lateral or both). I'm guessing that the under-speed on the turn coordinator causes this and it isn't until it completely fails or one of the other lateral or vertical inputs actually fails that the 'fault' is triggered. The under speed occurs intermittently (as was my case).

I believe my turn coordinator in the KAP140 is going out. When I turn the KAP140 on, even if I am already at altitude and in cruise, it will fish back and forth in HDG mode or even in NAV mode with the NAV captured. A brief phone discussion with the avionics shop concurs that it is likely the turn coordinator. They indicated that the cost for a serviceable replacement is somewhere north of $1000. For those of you who have replaced their KAP140 TC, is this estimate what you have experienced?

Thanks

Cary,

I did that recently and it was $1,400. Exactly the same symptom. I think I have an iPhone video of it somewhere.

Thanks. I needed a reality check. Aircraft spruce has them for about $500, but they may not be the correct ones for our KAP140. I guess I have to make a trip to the avionics shop, after I figure out where my oil leak is coming from :(

Make sure it's the right one. It has to have output for autopilots. I don't see anything like this that cheap at AS.

Yes. I was just looking at the price of TC's on AS. The avionics shop will determine the correct TC, obtain it, and put it in. As I said, I was just looking for a reality check.

Cary,

Another data point for you, I paid $1,206 to have mine replaced in a DA40.

Hello,
I flew to Corsica last WE. Tremendous trip in blue sky !
On the last leg (LFLS-EBST, see reports), I was in calm air at FL105, the KAP 140 started to swing left to right in a 2 Hz regular cycle. I recycled the KAP 140 and the Rate TC several times with no result. The AP was still doing its job and responded normally to HDG changes but, nonetheless, I decide to hand fly the rest of the trip.
Yesterday I went back to our hangar and checked the AP on the ground and in the air and it worked normally.
Has anyone already experienced this ?
