Re: LED Landing / Taxi lights for the DA40
Thanks for the pictures Chris. To my eye, they tell in pictures what I see in words. I can find elements in each picture that I prefer over the other. Plus, a different LED would probably look entirely different in accordance with its reflectors, etc. If I had to pick my preferred illumination from these two pictures, I would give a slight edge to the HID but both do the job. My main conern with the LED in this picture is the concentrated focal point and glare. It would be interesting to see the same kind of A/B comparison with 90% relative humidity.

Tim- Are the new LEDs that you installed the Whelen 71125? If so, Aircraft Spruce wants about $550 for a 10 and 30 degree 28V pair. Where did you find them for $450. Thanks. Bernie

Bernie-
Yes, they are Whelen 71125. I bought them at the Aircraft Spruce booth at OSH, I didn't realize it at the time, but they were on sale.

Re: LED Landing / Taxi lights for the DA40
Well now I'm confused on the taxi/landing light.
Whelen email support identified 0771685 as the correct light for both taxi and landing, the difference being the mounted angle in the wing, not the beam angle of the fixture. They specifically recommended I do not use the optional diffuser that is available for the wider beam angle with that lamp.
Did I put the wrong replacments in my wing?

Lee-
The Whelen 0771685 LEDs are a "drop in" replacement for the existing incandescent lights (fit in the same fixture). These can be installed via a 337, but in my opinion you will be disappointed. They appear brighter than the incandescent lights (due to the color temperature of the light), they don't improve the night illumination.
That's why I pulled them out and replaced them with the current production standard LEDs via the SB.

Got it, thanks. I'll have to revisit this; my research is usually better than that!

Anyone ever get any noise on the radio after LED landing and taxi light install? I installed aforementioned and it seems my radio has a lot of static when I receive from ATC now...pretty bad.

Does the static go away when you turn off the landing and taxi lights, or is it there all the time?diamondchad wrote:Anyone ever get any noise on the radio after LED landing and taxi light install? Have you re-adjusted your squelch both on the radio and the audio panel?

Re: LED Landing / Taxi lights for the DA40
Ok, good news! Found the issue. It’s the Electroair EIS. When I turn it off, radio noise goes away. Seems this issue started when I had the overhal done on the engine. Perhaps the shop didn’t route wires back the way they were or improperly grounded something etc.
Thoughts anyone?
