Engine Heater

Post by Brichards »

After several years of winter flying which seem to always start off with a 45+ minute engine warm-up, I purchased and just received a Reiff preheat system. The two most likely alternatives for power are to route the plug to the front cooling air intake or back to the oil access door. I think the front would be easier since I would not have to penetrate the fiberglass engine shroud.

Can anyone out there tell me how their system was installed?

Thanks.

Does anyone remember if the 110V cable routed through the fiberglass bulkhead or underneath it? I plan to install this Saturday.

Thanks again.

Hello
I purchased couple weeks ago the Turbo XP system and I routed the wires to the oil access door underneath the fiberglass.
The harder part was to glue on the oil heater and the temperature sensor to the oil pan.
The heater works perfectly, at 0 Celsius outside temperature in unheated hangar it takes 3 hours to heat up the oil to 130 Fahrenheit.

Hello again
I also mounted a GSM auto switch, http://www.gsm-auto.com/
and its a perfect solution for me, before driving to the airport I just switch on the heater with SMS.

My plane came with the Tanis heater pre-installed. After about 5 years of service, the heating elements of the oil pan and of one of the cylinders stopped working. We replaced the whole thing with the Reiff system last winter (mainly because the shop had one in stock) and it's been working fine since.

The plug is attached to the oil filler tube as well.

I have a Reiff pre-heater as well, and the 110V plug is strapped to the oil filler neck, like most folks' are. It's been there 5 years, and no problems. This system uses heater bands around the cylinder bases, and a pad for the oil sump. I use a phone-operated switch so I can turn it on & off from home.

Same as Eric, except I have no hangar, no power and my plane is sitting in 4 inches of snow on a frozen tarmac :-(( happy Xmas
