UPDATE: SuperCharged DA40

Post by BRS »

Greetings & Merry Christmas to everyone!
I'm writing to pass on the latest update from Rod on this project.
-brs
Hello everyone,

We received the signed TIA this week and immediately asked for a DAR (Designated Airworthiness Representative) to be assigned to issue a Show Compliance experimental airworthiness certificate. I submitted the application for the airworthiness certificate in August and it has only been waiting on the signing of the TIA.

We had some luck here as the person in charge of assigning the job to the DAR was out of the office. I got hold of a duty officer who pushed it through in less then two hours.

We could have our certificate next week,

however........

The FAA has something new, the Safety Review Board.

We will have a conference next week with 5 representatives from different FAA departments and our crew.

We will review such things as, aircraft performance, weight and balance, has the TIA been signed, where will we all meet after an accident, airfield environment, weather, NOTAMS. Three pages of concerns. Not sure how this works as the only people at the test will be our pilots and our Acoutical DER.

The test will take place in Texas. Easier to take the plane to all the equipment then the other way around.

Given the holiday season I expect we will test after the new year. This noise test, added this fall at the FAA's request, is our last test. With our test results submitted I hope we are cleared to get our STC this spring.

UPDATE: SuperCharged DA40

Post by BRS »

Hi All,

I'm very glad to be giving this update. It marks (or rather it should) the end of our testing. Everything will soon be in the hands of the FAA and all they have to do is read it and sign it. Sound easy right? Well lets hope so. Seems they have lost documents in the past, or just failed to read them, or gone on vacation leaving no one to fill in. That's the story (well one of them anyway) of this STC effort. Following is a quote from Rod.
We completed the acoustic testing in Texas last weekend. Test went without a hitch. Noise well within limits.

We should have the test report done shortly and will submit it and the final paperwork like the Compliance Report and draft STC.

I do have some worries of course. We sent the Flight Manual Supplement and TIR (Type Inspection Report, 250 pages) in August and they have not review them yet.

Wow!!! Almost seven years and the damn thing is still not complete. Seven years for a lousy supercharger
on an IO-360. That is nothing short of astounding. An STC for an airplane that for all intents at this time is not building them with IO-360s. And we wonder why GA is in such decline.

Ditto. How long would it take for a completely new airframe? We have met the enemy and it is us!

Thanks for the update Brock. Are you flying around with the plane? If yes, can you tell us how it feels and what settings you are using? I can imagine that the supercharger must really turn the DA40 into a wonderful climber to the 12'000 ft region and deliver great performance and good efficiency there? (I know you've posted some numbers but that was a long time ago and surely you must have found optimum settings?)
If this can help you and Rod feel better: I think that the STC stands a far better chance of being adopted by DAI Canada now than ever before. That's a huge chunk of R&D done on their behalf.
If they sell the upgrade for 40K, I bet half of the new 40's will have it.

Hello,
is FAT also planning to have STC recognized in Europe (EASA)? I know there is an EASA STC for the Compressor Kit for the Cirrus SR22.
There was also a smal article in the german Magazine "Aerokurier" about the FAT Compressor DA40-180.

Greetings
Oliver
