Must have for the DA-20

Post by soarer20 »

This is the best GPS/ Phone mount I have found and gives you WAY better situational awareness than handholding an iPad or using your central mounted GPS. The grip is fairly tight but its still fairly easy to take the device out of the mount. My phone stays secure when flying in turbulence. I would recommend you have a USB power adapter near by as the iPhone seems to have high power consumption running foreflight, etc connected to ADSB, etc.

The Akron Road Vise can hold your IPhone, Garmin 660, etc. I attempted to fit the IPad mini in the larger version but the iPad was too wide fort the mount.

All the hardware including the Ram mount, and Akron holder, some spare panel screws, totaled about $50.

I mounted it with a Ram Diamond ball base and only had to drill one hole in the panel. For the second hole I used one of the stall horn corner screws for the other mount. To prevent the Ram mount from scratching the panel I cut a piece of high quality electrical tape to the back of the base but you could use rubber sheet or something similar.

One of the best features of having your phone on the left side is it can stay in your scan and if you have track or bearing to way point turned on it will be super easy to stay on course.

Another great feature of having the phone mounted on the left side of the cockpit is the phone/ gps can be cooled by the air vent. My iPhone has yet to overheat in 80 degree weather at altitude in an otter box.
