How do I upgrade 912 80hp to 912 100 hp
hi guys,
I have the DA20-A1 80 hp engine. It's reaching the 2000 hr mark. I wanted to know if I can upgrade to the 100hp 912 and what do I need to do? I can I just buy one and stick it in? I have the Hoffman prop and it says its rated to works on the 100hp so I'm assuming I can keep my prop.
This will be my first major change on an aircraft so any guidance helps.
Thanks gang!

There is actually an EASA STC for this conversion:

I'm not sure if you can do it in the States...

Right now, only Diamond approved shops can perform the K100 conversion. In Europe, any A&P can perform the EASA STC as mentioned in the previous post. The cowling is different, the oil cooler is different, there are some instrumentation changes for the 912S engine and stall strips are applied to the wings. You also get a gross weight increase.
I had asked Diamond some time ago if they would release the SB and WI for this upgrade, but they said no.
I assume you know that TBO is advisory only for Part 91 operators in the U.S.

Re: How do I upgrade 912 80hp to 912 100 hp
I'm looking at the very same thing... My engine is fine, but I have some tax deductions I could use to upgrade. I had looked at the K100 conversion early on, but at the time Diamond Canada had one approved shop that could do it and given the parts situation of the DA20-A1, I doubt they would even do it anymore. It involved a new cowling as well. Price was north of $40k. This was over 8 years ago.
Now onto the interesting conversion.. I have been looking into this the past few weeks. MT Propeller has a European STC (EASA) which allows the conversion of any DA20-A1 (81 or 100hp) to the Rotax 912iSC engine and the MT MTV-21 prop. They also install an engine management unit to replace the current engine gauges.
I spoke with my local fsdo about the upgrade and they were willing to look into a field approval if I can get them data. MT Germany does not currently want to share their data with me. They told me that they want to get an FAA STC and gather more data from the current one.
I'll post an update as I get more info. Here is a link to the EASA STC. It's quite impressive:

Re: How do I upgrade 912 80hp to 912 100 hp
I need to correct my previous post. In Europe, any A&P can convert a DV-20 to a K100 per the Diamond Service Bulletin and Work Instructions. I have no idea about the requirements of the M-T STC. Sorry about the error...

Good to know. Does Diamond Austria publish the service bulletin and WI? If these were available it may be possible to do a field approval here. Wonder how much the cowling would cost. I'd still prefer the fuel injected engine though. I think it was only $4k more.krellis wrote:I need to correct my previous post. Re: How do I upgrade 912 80hp to 912 100 hp
As I remember from 6 years ago or so, the K100 cowling was north of 3K for the carbon fiber version. The Service Bulletin for the DV20 is probably available online but the Work Instructions are (were) not.
I really don’t think the conversion is rocket science although you would think so from Diamond Canada’s reluctance to share the documents. The hardest part is probably accurately placing the stall strips, but that’s just my opinion.
