"The Gap"

Post by 1911Tex »

'04 DA20-C1: The narrow gap between the fuselage and the wing. Previous owner (3 years ago) used factory fill which is already showing age. I thought about using heavy duty white duct tape to seal the gap. Any better ideas? Thanks folks!

The previous owner of my DA20-C1 installed 3M polyurethane protective tape from Aircraft spruce. It looks great and I would assume will last longer than duct tape.

Take a look at "sailplane tape" - it's what the sailplane folks use to seal the gaps after assembly. I bought a roll a few years ago, and am still using it to seal my under-wing air vent in the winter, the bottoms of the front-air ducts, etc. It seems to hold up forever, and is just stretchy enough to handle the curves and bends without tearing or folding. And it matches the paint really well!

I bought mine here: http://www.cumulus-soaring.com/bowlus.htm

+1 on the sailplane tape, which I put on my DA40 and it worked great.

The other option (which is similar to sailplane product) is in the DA20-C1 Illustrated Parts Catalog. Chapter 52-40, Access Panels, page 3, Figure Item #050, part number 4811-1-1-2, wing root tape.

I purchased the wing root tape from Diamond as well. Expensive stuff but it's what the factory recommends so I stick to that!
