This description of an accident last week where the plane was identified as a DA42 made no sense:

AIRCRAFT CRASHED INTO POCOMOONSHINE LAKE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO LAND WITH THE WHEELS EXTENDED, PRINCETON, ME.

Especially after I looked up the N-number - N142JW

After poking around a few times I finally figured out today what the exact error in recording it was.

I dug around and finally found a terse Sheriff log report in a local newspaper that described the incident and mentioned the pilot's name and, as expected, it was on floats (amphibious I deduced). So I searched the FAA registration by name and found the correct registration was 142JD. It's an Challenger ultralight, obviously landed with the wheels extended on the lake. As slow as these land the guy just got a bloody nose. :D
