Foggles Experiment

Post by Rich »

Eyeglasses + Over-the-ear headset + ball cap in flight. Foggles starts to overload the ear. Trial 1:

Seems workable so far. Fairly easy mount/removal in flight.

I found these to be the easiest to use with glasses. Very simple and resilient.

I had a set of these and didn't like them. They warped over time. Hence I'm experimenting with something different.

There was a guy who put together a hood under the name, "the Best IFR Hood." Basically the kind of manilla paper used for folders. Sold it for $6 IIRC. No longer selling it, probably because it wasn't worth it. It's been copied by products like the "Feather Hood," but $20 is ridiculous,

That said, I have one of the "originals" and a duplicate I made from a leftover file folder. They work really well. Good blocking, light weight, elastic strap with no pressure under glasses. Folds in the thickness of, well, a file folder for storage in a flight bag. I mostly use them with pilots who forget theirs* when doing recurrent training, unless I'm feeling nasty.

[* I personally use a Vban, but never really noticed undue temple pressure with any view limiting device I've used; getting over the glasses is the only issue I've had.]

I used a baseball cap that I pulled down far enough that I couldn't see over the glareshield. My CFII liked it and the DPE was fine with it.

I used Pooley‘s Foggles which were excellent during my IRA training in the U.S.

I don’t have experience with foggles, but I recently heard about smart foggles in Max’s aviation news talk podcast which seem to have lot’s of advantages:
