ForeFlight Bug & temporary work around

Post by TwinStarScott »

My map page has frozen up on me during several recent flights - and even on the ground while connected to a WiFi network. Here is the response from ForeFlight tech. support:

“The map freeze issue is a known issue we are tracking right now. We do not yet know the cause, but it seems that tapping any other tab in ForeFlight should release the map from its frozen state.

Please feel free to send diagnostics and we'll add them to the investigation.”

If this is also happening to you, please help them get to the bottom of this. Thanks!

I have noticed this as well, not while actively using the program, but while ForeFlight is running, then I go to a different program, like Safari, then back to ForeFlight, and it is then in the frozen map state.

Yes, I can confirm this behavior on both the iPad and iPhone.

I haven't seen this on my iPad mini running ForeFlight. I do have an inflight WiFi connection to my Scout ADS-B receiver.

Not sure if it's a bug or feature.

If you hit the "current location" button at the top right, and it surrounded by blue, then the map is locked and tracking your airplane. You can zoom, but not pan. Your airplane stays in the same place while you zoom.

If you hit it again, the blue background goes away and you can zoom and pan.

Happened to me and I quit out of ForeFlight and reloaded. Worked on reset. Think I tried clicking other tabs with no success.

Russ, I'm fairly certain this is a bug because the map screen is completely frozen and unresponsive - not even allowing for zooming in or out. And of course it often happens at the worst possible time, like on an instrument approach. My guess is that there is some conflict with the latest version of IOS.

There are a lot of potential variables, here. I haven't seen this, but I never switch my iPad from FF to another app when in flight. Lacking a sim card in the iPad makes it kind of a moot exercise. I haven't tried it with my iPhone in flight but I have been trying it this afternoon on the ground with all data being fed from the internet (traffic from Flight Aware) and can't duplicate the problem.

In flight, my GPS position, AHRS data and flight path synching with my GNS units are supplied by my FS210. Traffic and other ADS-B stuff comes in through a Stratus 3.

What are the data streams when the problem occurs?

In my case, running strictly FF connected to a GDL-52. Also, happens when connected to a home WiFi network.

Not sure it's related, but I continually get crashes when scrolling through a 3D view of an upcoming flight plan. If you scroll too quickly, ForeFlight bombs and you're back on the Home screen. I've duplicated the issue on my iPad and my iPad Mini.
