Paul, thanks for your insight! With several moving maps in the aircraft, I also find it super useful (and for some reason, not confusing at all) to have different stuff and different orientation on them... e.g. I usually have (1) aeronautical (w terrain/traffic) North Up on the iPad, (2) traffic only Track Up on the PFD insert, and (3) topo/terrain/traffic North Up on the MFD. It's cool that the 3 screens give the pilot the flexibility to mix and match as best fits his/her taste.
Cool... thanks for watching!

Confession: I *USED* to be a NORTH UP kinda guy (nearly all paper maps are all drawn that way, right?), while my pilot wife has always been TRACK UP. So we had 2 different G1000 profiles defined, so whoever was PIC could load their preference.

But a few years ago when we got a new plane I got lazy about switching profiles, and we started using a common TRACK UP G1000 profile. I learned that it's so much easier to spot traffic, weather, and ground waypoints on the MFD that way, so I got hooked on TRACK UP. And as I became a more experienced pilot, my situational awareness improved so that I could make radio calls reporting my position without being dependent on a NORTH UP map to determine relative direction.

So preferring TRACK UP on the G1000 and the iPad, I always use the Aeronautical Map (instead of the VFR or IFR charts) on Foreflight since it shows all text right-side-up independent of the aircraft's track. It's lack of clutter also make ADS-B or TAS traffic targets show up much more easily.

Dave, super stuff! And, oh, the wisdom of admitting we can learn something from whomever is sitting in the right seat... let alone our spouse :) . Priceless.
Thanks!

Except that whenever my pilot wife and I fly together, she ALWAYS gets left seat -- the secret to marital harmony when both partners are pilots! ;)

(Of course as a CFI, I'm used to the right seat.)

When I want to communicate or identify a bearing, I look at the HSI. It's always in Track Up mode!

Yep, both the arrow and the tail are useful on the "always Track Up" HSI.

Very useful. Thanks for sharing. I prefer North up map as track up will get my brain lost for some reason. Maybe was grown up thinking north up

Keep in mind various useful information does not appear in the aeronautical data display. An example would be alerts to practice areas. It's worth toggling the sectional data on from time to time: Here is one of three such alerts in the Redmond/Bend/Madras, OR area:

Rich, excellent point... and a check I need to remind myself to do, at minimum during flight planning -- maybe scribble a note on the map; that way the scribble will also be there with only the aeronautical enabled.
Thanks,
Wayne
