That innocuous foam cover

That cover over the microphone popped off while I was pulling the headset from over the seat. I figured, "no big deal" and went flying without it in place. What a bummer. My Sierra picked up all the cockpit noise and funneled it right through the intercom. Super-annoying
. So after returning I found the thing lying on the rear floor and zip-tied it in place.

According to this interview with Dr. Brent Blue, microphone covers should be dipped in a 10% bleach solution and then left to air dry. I assume this would mostly apply well before a pilot or passenger switch is made. It might also now be handy to carry extra mic covers in the age of COVID-19, along with either some Clorox sheets or alcohol wipes.

Not a bad thought. But in my case I'm the sole infester of said microphone

I had a similar experience lately Rich. I just ordered 4 extras to stash in the plane and flight bag.
I like your idea of the zip tie over the supplied tiny rubberband

I bought a 10 pack from Amazon before the last Young Eagles. They don't fit everything perfectly, but they're cheap.

I have some spares in the airplane. My headsets are all David Clark. I generally replace them only when they start to fall apart (which in my case tends to be about 2 - 3 years).

Each passenger gets one to keep. Except for my wife's headset and my own, I pull them off after flight to make certain the next user gets a new one.
