KAP140 / WAAS Navigator

Post by Sandy »

Does anyone know how many non-WAAS DA40, DA42, and DA62s there are that have a KAP140 but no GIA63W?

Sandy, per your question and late here at night - I quickly entered a couple of formulas to calculate this information.

As of today and according to the G1000 petition - there are approximately:

37 - DA40's and
60 - DA42's that meet this criteria (non-WAAS with a KAP140 A/P)

It is highly unlikely there are any DA62's with this hardware combination, given how new this model is. As all DA62's should have a GFC700 and are WAAS equipped with at least a 63W.

It's still not too late to add your aircraft, by either sending me a PM or by posting a message using this link:

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6643&start=500

You may also reference the link below to obtain the information the petition is attempting to capture, to answer questions just like the one you posed this evening. Unfortunately, and as you can see, not all owners provided this DAN effort with complete information.

Finally, the G1000 petition is a small sample size. Given the large percentage of Diamond owners who do not participate on DAN and therefore have yet to "sign" up. Plus a small percentage of legacy owners on DAN have chosen not to participate - for whatever reason.

Sandy
KAP140 G1000 Diamond aircraft:

DA40-180 aircraft produced between 2004 and 2006
DA42 TDI aircraft produced between 2005 and 2008
DA42-L360 aircraft (all model years)

None of these KAP-140 aircraft were produced with GIA63Ws (i.e., WAAS). The GIA63W didn't exist until 2007, and was only installed in new aircraft with GFC700s.
(Exception: 2007 DA40 XL aircraft all had the GFC700, but no WAAS/GIA63Ws, and there were a "handful" of 2008 DA42 TDI aircraft produced with GFC700.)

I would guess the total number of DA40 and DA42 aircraft produced with the KAP-140s (all non-WAAS) is probably about 600-700.

A few owners of these KAP-140 aircraft have subsequently replaced their GIA63s with GIA63Ws, but not very many because of the high cost (more than $20K).

However, many of the 2007 DA40 XL aircraft I've seen HAVE been retrofitted with GIA63Ws, along with new MFDs with the VNAV button for their GFC700 autopilot on their bezels -- essentially upgrading them to XLS models.

And don't forget that from 2001 to 2003, all of the autopilot-equipped DA40s had KAP-140s (but not the G1000). Mine is of this configuration, but not pertinent to the issue in question, so I have not "signed up".

Is there anyone on the forum who as 2004-2006 Diamond that originally had the GIA63 + KAP140 (non-WAAS) and upgraded to WAAS with the GIA63W? If so, I'd like to hear about your personal experience flying coupled LPV approaches with the KAP140.

Bonus points for a video showing the PFD and KAP140 in action.

Agree - Waiting to pick up my plane from Premier (2005) and really interested in this upgrade to see PIREPS on cost vs. worth.

Hello Paul,

I got the plane back with the WAAS installation (via the URBE STC).

I did two coupled approach videos. If quality is too poor let me know I’ll send them another way.

No issues at all with the KAP140 doing coupled approaches.

Best

Salim
