Civil Aviation Safety Alert - Carbon Monoxide

Post by gordsh »

Just thought I would share this Civil Aviation Safety Alert I received from Transport Canada yesterday which is trying to raise awareness of hazards that may result in exposure to carbon monoxide (CO).

Max Trescott covered this issue several times in his podcast and it's well worth every pilot's time to listen, if only to be able to identify the symptoms. Unlike hypoxia, you don't immediately recover by getting some fresh air. The Mooney story is amazing. While the classic problem is from exhaust heat exchangers, there are also stories of CO poisoning from turbochargers.

I personally purchased a Pocket CO, put it on my plane keychain and incorporated it into my check lists. It goes on as soon as I start the engine and off when I shut down. It's pretty sensitive and will read > 0 when the canopy is cracked open in hot weather when the engine is running, then 0 when the canopy is closed.

Note that the detectors need servicing every 1-2yrs, they aren't buy and forget.

The cost re-calibrate my Pocket CO is $80 + $10 shipping and they recommend it yearly. The Sensorcon re-calibration is $50 + $14 shipping. Sensorcon recommends every six months for professionals, and says after two years the device will show "end of life".

These are not buy and forget devices, they're an annual cost item.
