Re: The G1000 project - "The next step"
This looks like a really good first step! Thanks to all of the team for seeing this through the meeting phase. Now the ball is in Diamond's court - let's hope they follow through. Looking forward to filling out the survey when it is available.
Thanks again, everyone!
Thanks again, everyone!

Please contact every Diamond owner you know and ask them to register on DAN and watch for the survey.
Also begin giving serious thought to your avionics upgrade needs and budget.

You should likely consider 1yr, 5yr and 10yr horizons for the answers to these questions.

I like that idea (although I'd rather bucketize it more like ASAP, 1yr, 2yr, 3yr.TimS wrote:You should likely consider 1yr, 5yr and 10yr horizons for the answers to these questions.

5 or even 10 is a bit far out; we waited long enough for what we want to achieve here...

Re: The G1000 project - "The next step"
The survey is coming from Diamond. While we have not seen it, we expect it to be focused on gauging interest in a variety of near term upgrade opportunities tailored to different make/model/G1000 configuration combinations. It's probably best to think of the survey as testing demand for possibilities in the next 12-18 months. I do not expect there to be any questions testing upgrade intentions or budgets in longer time frames. But big caveat, I have not seen the survey.
The longer term issue of the future of our integrated avionics is worthy of a whole new thread, but not until after this first step.
What is really important is to make do everything we can to have Diamond receive responses from as many owners as possible, throughout the world.

Boatguy,
True, but I hope Diamond is reading this thread.
As such, if people think through their longer term budgets, it will help Diamond know how to structure a sustainable model to address this issue. A one time solution of 12-18 months does not fix the problem; it just kicks the can down the road.

Re: The G1000 project - "The next step"
The two major wishes to improve my DA42 with ASAP are WAAS for LPVs and a robust AP.
I certainly would be open to the idea of replacing the wonky KAP140 (which is a nonstop troublemaker and INOP most of the time in my plane despite repeated CPR attempts from avionics experts) with a digital AP like the GFC600 or one from Bendix King or S-TEC - but that requires Diamond's help to get their hardware certified for us.
I'm hoping that these kind of options are/were also looked at by Diamond.

Re: The G1000 project - "The next step"
Although I would also like to get some less costly KAP140 replacement, it seems that GFC700 is the only option. I replaced KAP140 servos twice, the autopilot itself packed twice and now I have occasional failures. So yes, I’m pretty fed up with KAP140 and I’ll gladly accept anything but at reasonable pricing.
