Re: The G1000 project - "The next step"
For non-WAAS, DA42 TDI owners, any number of questions come to mind over this most recent and rather depressing news.
Questions such as:
1) is a short-term investment into these now even harder to source 63W’s going to be money well spent*?
2) should one of the 63W boxes fail, what are the chances of a replacement 63W box being located in a timely fashion?
And at what price?
3) Same question from #2, only when a nonWAAS 63 box needs replacing. What is the inventory of these, even older, boxes (does anybody know)?
4) if you’re based several thousand miles away from a factory, is it worth the time, effort, and added expense for only a single upgrade?
After reading this news from Dave today, do others feel like I - which is the need for finding a non-G1000 solution is now even more pressing, whether it be from Garmin** or a competitor?
*as it certainly puts owners in that much deeper of a financial hole, should a viable long-term and more affordable solution ever become available.
** such as the TXi or G3X, driven by either a GTN650 or 750 (in place of the MFD). With enhanced backup instruments, such as the G5 (installed as a backup AI).

Re: The G1000 project - "The next step"
On a Lycoming DA40, if you remove the access panel under the rear baggage floor (held with only 4 camloc screws), you can easily read the GIA63W model numbers located on top of each unit.pietromarx wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2019 6:54 am How does one tell whether one has the -1, -2, or -20 unit installed? Don't say a sticker on the PCB ...
Thanks
You should also be able to consult Chapter 6 of your Aircraft Flight Manual "Equipment List and Equipment Inventory" to see the GIA63W model number.
Interestingly, I went back and found a photo of the units installed in my 2008 DA40 XLS, and they were both p/n 011-01105-00. So the part numbers I originally posted from my conversation with Ed aren't correct. (Note: moderator has fixed this)
Doing some quick searching on Google, I found the following GIA63W models:
011-01105-00
011-01105-01
011-01105-20
I'm guessing that only -00 and -01 units will work in DA42 TDI aircraft.
Unfortunately the forum software won't let me go back and modify my post from last night to correct the part numbers. So everywhere I listed "-01 and -02" should be "-00 and -01" (Note: moderator has fixed this)

Garmin maintains an inventory of spares. Any time a GIA needs repair, Garmin will quickly send you one of their spares for installation in your plane, and you are then required to send your failed unit back to them -- thus allowing Garmin to repair it for the next owner who needs a replacement. Most G1000 LRU swaps cost around $2K or so.TwinStarScott wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2019 7:32 am2) should one of the 63W boxes fail, what are the chances of a replacement 63W box being located in a timely fashion?

I wouldn't rely on this level of detail in chapter 6. I've found errors in this data and it often lists multiple equivalent types of equipment that might be installed. I keep a separate document with corrections that I've found. On a Lycoming DA40, if you remove the access panel under the rear baggage floor (held with only 4 camloc screws), you can easily read the GIA63W model numbers located on top of each unit.

Eyeball it directly in the plane.

Dave, to avoid confusion, I edited your original post and made the changes - let me know if I missed anything.

I found a picture of my rack, too - here is the sticker on the GIA (both of mine appear to be -01 units):

Re: The G1000 project - "The next step"
So if I can find a GIA63W any idea what other costs are involved in upgrading the G1000 in the DA40 (2005) to WAAS?

Re: The G1000 project - "The next step"
I note that there are also -30 (GIA-63H, for helicopters) and -40 (GIA-63W) versions of the GIA-63W out there, too.
Given that the -01 version (and probably beyond) are rated for power outages of 200ms (vs. 50ms for the -00), you'll want those.

You'll also need new GPS antennas compatible with WAAS.Ultrapilot1 wrote: ↑Sat Dec 28, 2019 10:04 pm So if I can find a GIA63W any idea what other costs are involved in upgrading the G1000 in the DA40 (2005) to WAAS?
