Flying in the Aegean Sea?

Post by Wilfried »

Any of you (probably mostly European pilots) flew recently in the Aegean Sea? Would be great, if you share your experiences or target me to some good resources in the web. I happen to have a week off this summer and anticipation is second to flying...

You can find useful tips at AOPA Greece site.

When I was flying through Greece earlier this year, I have been warned to stay out of Fraport-owned airports due to cost in the hundreds of Euros per landing. You might want to double check cost prior to flying even into smaller airports.

Airports which are ports of entry (mandatory first landing in Greece) are almost all operated by Fraport and they charge a lot (600€) just for what is actually technical landing (clearing the customs and possibly refueling). Fraport is just one part of the problem - the other are handlers that use this situation; they take at least half of earlier mentioned amount. There are just few which are not (Ioannina LGIO comes to my mind first) and you should carefully check in advance where you are landing. I believe everything is explained well at this AOPA Greece link above.

I just glanced through your link (thank you). Extraordinary. Americans often complain about the slow encroachment of regulation and increase in fees into all aspects of flying, but the Greece situation is remarkable.

Actually we started legal case at European Commission against such practice in several countries on basis of anti-monopoly law. We’ll see if this will result with any decrease in fees.

Thanks Emir! The AOPA site is a great resource. Thanks to those who run it!

Not so great is the monopoly created by Fraport (swissport). Looks like they opportunistically took advantage by the financial situation of the Greek airports. That is really embarrassing!

That sounds great! I wish you best luck here. I am curious: Who is “we”?

A group of pilots who regularly visit euroga.org and who donated funds via crowdfunding for financing law case.
