The lack of support for legacy aircraft is pretty much industry wide and getting worse. Diamond is not the only one. The faster things change and progress especially from an avionics standpoint, the less support one can expect. It’s the nature of the beast. You just can’t have everything all of the time.

Scott,

What ever happened to hand flying the plane? When I have flown in a Diamond, properly trimmed it becomes a two finger plane....

RNAV LPV approaches in IMC. You can't fly them, by hand or AP, unless you have WAAS. And where Scott lives, VMC is a little less routine.

Yes, Tim this should not become a lost art - still do plenty of that when flying locally on VFR days and while staying current when shooting practice instrument approaches. As hand flying is a lot of fun and keeps one sharp. Where I find the A/P most valuable is when flying single pilot IFR on 7 to 8-hour trips and this is the main reason for owning a TwinStar in the first place. It certainly makes a great cross-country airplane. But then if I remember correctly, you’ve owned an even more capable twin, so you know all about taking day long jaunts and how tiring that would be without an A/P.

Also, myself* and others view the A/P as almost essential on long trips - leaving the pilot much sharper on approach and landing at the final destination. Regardless if the last instrument approach of the day is coupled or hand flown. Certainly, it has been written countless times in GA publications how valuable A/P’s are in reducing workload when flying single pilot IFR - and I also view A/P’s as a range extender on all day cross x-county trips.

Finally, I can’t be alone in believing KAP140 owners need a cost-effective replacement for this aging A/P. That is, if we have any hopes of being able to afford upgrading to the NXi (NXi $165,000 + GFC700 $80,000 = $265,000). And upgrading to an NXi only and then having no A/P is equally absurd.

*heard Master CFI instructor Gary Reeves last June tell an audience at the LVK AOPA fly-in that he suggests all GA pilots always engage their A/P above 800 to 1000 AGL (whatever the POH says) and always filing into the system - even on VFR days to nearby airports with no instrument approaches. This is advice I don’t always follow, but he makes an interesting safety point.

Back briefly to an earlier post you made:
The problem is volume. . . . . . And the price to get there is hefty.
Yes, I agree - partly. Wouldn’t you also think another factor for the “hefty” prices Garmin is charging for their OEM equipment is because they have a monopoly in this market? Yet, should the day ever come when a competitor decides to offer a true glass panel alternative to the G1000, history indicates their cash cow margins will be eroded. So why doesn’t Garmin lower their G1000 prices now and retain customer loyalty?

Since currently most legacy G1000 customers are going to be forced to wait for a competitor to enter this market anyway (on price alone). And should the competition also happen to offer additional advantages over the NXi, Garmin will lose sales in the long run - having missed out completely on sales opportunities they could have made in the near term. Albeit at a lower profit margin per unit.

Garmin has taken a different strategy with the G3X system now available for many certified aircraft. It provides nearly the same functionality as G1000 NXi for a lot less money, so some aircraft manufacturers are starting to ship their new aircraft with G3X flight decks.

Scott,

No business incentive for Garmin to do so.
Until someone has a competitor, Garmin will not make a move.
The market has proven many times, that the vast majority of customers have very short memories.

Tommy wrote: Mon Nov 11, 2019 11:38 am You guys worry to much. Fly your airplanes or sell them and forget about it. Your not going to get the support you so stridently hope for.
It’s never been there and never will be. For whatever reason some just can’t see the forest from the trees.
You're making a strong argument to go Cirrus or an older legacy airframe. Cirrus still upgrades SW on their oldest airframes ! We can put newest Garmin tech at reasonable prices into older airframes.

I love my DA40 2004 but might have to change planes to be sure not to get toasted years down the road if G1000 / KAP 140 parts cannot be repaired or replaced. Otherwise love my plane.

Yes. Please include me on the petition. I fly a 2008 DA40 XLS and I would very much like to see the G1000 update. I am seriously looking at selling my DA40 and getting a Cirrus because the poor support from Diamond makes me concerned that my aircraft will become completely obsolete in years to come. My registration is C-FSAS

Dave mentioned that "some" manufacturers are going to G3X as an option, is Diamond going to be one of them??? Or can it be installed as an upgrade to any of the existing legacy panel choices, G1000 or not? I had the G3X in my experimental and it was light years ahead of my 2012 DA40,
