Nice sheet. The little devil in my soul just sees the inevitable:

a) someone accidentally empties the whole sheet - oops?
b) someone adds or deletes stuff with ill intent

You can make the sheet just viewable by the internet. People still register here for data.
Or you make a google form, where people insert their airplanes and you manually then transfer these to the public list. So it looks like a form webpage, where you insert the needed data and it goes to a spesific google sheet. This is a bit trickier to make, not much thou.

So at least make backups of the original list if a or b happens

It should be relatively safe as-is since Google tracks changes so you can always back up to a prior revision if necessary.

I never bothered to check the version history functionality in docs. I Just took a peek in one of the sheets I maintain, version history seems to be working nicely.

Appreciate your concerns gentlemen, as I have them too! My plan to combat this possibility is continue to keep a seperate master file that can't be tampered with online. For instance, the correction Emir made today, has already been transferred over. If another owner / pilot would like to do this as well, please let us know. It shouldn't be too time consuming for them and this can only help us to further protect the data by spreading it around - should the worst happen (such as my backups get lost or destroyed, the cloud backup fails, etc.)

So for now though, let's allow any and all to edit. If problems arise, the online file can always be changed to "comment only." Fingers crossed we don't have to go there.

Would like to thank Pekka again for his brilliant suggestion! As this spreads out the data entry work and largely off my shoulders. All that has to be done now is to simply copy and paste the new entries - love it!!! Also, from my limited google doc's research, having the data stored in a different format will pay dividends should the spreadsheet ever need to be printed out* - such as for mailing hard copies to DAI and Garmin.

* as noted in a youtube video on the subject, google docs isn't the best for making hard copies.

Pekka, I think you should make the form and direct it to that Google doc. Then I think the Google doc can be locked. But you can always go back in time to different versions of the spreadsheet, I think.

Welcome Charlie - you've been added to the list! Thanks to you we're now at 40 aircraft, as we await further news from Pekka - in attempt to transition the data entry task from full service to self serve.

Thanks Tim! I'll study the above link in much greater detail after returning from a flight tomorrow. If nothing else, for my own education.

However, given the time difference, will wait to hear from Pekka first. If he has the time to volunteer in designing a form for us and then interfacing with the existing spreadsheet, all the better! Especially since this collaborative effort (on a global scale) is all uncharted waters for me.
