The FAA Airworthiness Directive (AD) on this topic was issued this morning in the Federal Register. It references Rev 4 of the Austro Engine MSB-E4-030/4, issued 18-Feb-2021. [It also references EASA ADs that I haven't researched.]

The AD is effective 10-May-2021.

Sort of unnerving that they have revised the affected engines two or three times …

Damnit- this just is a major irritant. We just had our annual done and they said no worries on the oil pump replacement you are not in that grouping. And to top it off the warranty just ended last day of April!

We hate having major work done to anything as it gives the ham fisted another chance to leave a mark and we like our things nice. And this on top of having to do a major belt service on the F40 and 348 Challenge this month. It always has some new blemish somewhere. Last time the Daytona had a small pin point on the fender from the inside where a heater core was replaced! While a belt failure in a F car will kill your wallet I suppose an engine failure could literally kill or injure so I get the importance, but why the addition of new serial numbers?

So, a few questions for the forum.

1-Being our first AD how much of this is covered by Diamond?

2-If it is not covered but would have been covered by the warranty, could one argue that it should be covered as they knew about or should have known about this problem when the first AD came out? Our warranty literally just ended April 30th.

3-This cost estimate offered by the AD is noted below. Our shop says it is 4 days of labor. Looks like it is twice the recommended time by the AD. Any experience with this?

4-I am thinking of taking this to Glen, although we were happy with the Annual done by Special Service Corp. We used them as they were much closer to our home base of CEU. I know they don't have as much experience with this.

We love the NG. Just flew back from SPG St Petersburg yesterday. with no issues except the headwinds, covering most at 9500.

Estimated Costs

Action
Remove and replace the oil pump, oil filter, and engine oil

Labor cost
16 work-hours × $85 per hour = $1,360

Parts cost
$1,488

Cost per product
$1,360

Cost on U.S. operators
$74,800

Diamond/Austro knew about this fault before your warranty expired. It's not your fault they couldn't get the list of affected planes/engines correct while you were still under warranty -- when they would have had to pay for the repair.

I would call Diamond customer support in Canada and plead your case. I'll be surprised if they don't cover the cost of the repair under warranty.

Are Diamond usually honourable about warranty claims?

I found Cirrus exemplary - for any perspective Cirrus buyers out there…but primarily because their engines are really, really terrible and always had an issue. Eventually cam spalling on a reasonably high use aircraft.

In my experience, yes. The only thing that used to annoy me as the owner of a DA42-VI under warranty was that they used to require the owner to pay international shipping costs on warranty-related parts. They've since eliminated this.

My experience is 18 years old, but, yes - they handled warranty claims honorably. They replaced my exhaust system almost 2 years after I purchased the airplane, and I had a couple of avionics shop visits for the KAP-140, which eventually required the computer to be replaced.

1. Diamond had been shipping out parts without invoices - I’m fairly certain they plan to cover the entire affected fleet.

2. It’s 16 hours per engine, so four days (assuming one guy) makes sense.

Austro MSB-E4-031 just grounded DA40NGs, and allows for a single ferry flight for DA42s and DA62s that have engines with the following serial numbers until oil pumps get replaced:
