Fuel injector SB (Austro MSB-E4-025)

Post by neema »

An SB from Diamond popped up for DA40 NGs and 62s but Austro has an MSB that exists for the whole Austro E4 family of engines. http://austroengine.at/uploads/pdf/MSBE4025.pdf

I was told at our shop that we'll see it come through for 42 NGs soon.

Wasn't too worried about it until the shop mentioned injectors will cost $12,000. I don't have a real quote but figured I'd see if anyone here has had any experience with it. I hope the shop was wrong.

This may be the case again for an Austro specific forum since it spans across a few different aircraft models.

It obviously affects all Austro engines. However, $12,000 looks quite pricy for injectors. It's worth of double-checking.

Having replaced a full set of fuel injectors on an Austro engine a few years ago, I can tell you that -- even if obtained from Diamond -- these are genuine Mercedes auto parts. Each injector was tested by Mercedes (or their supplier) for flow rate, and labeled with a unique code reflecting the results of that test.

So when injectors are replaced, it's important to also go into the Austro Engine Wizard software and enter the code for each new injector; this makes it possible for the ECU to manage exactly the correct fuel flow per installed injector.

Since these are standard fuel injectors for Mercedes OM640 diesel engines (of which more than a million were produced for A and B-class cars), it ought to be possible to purchase genuine Mercedes fuel injectors for a lot less money than obtaining the same parts through Diamond. The hardest part may be convincing your tech/mechanic that it's legal to do so.

It seems that this means 10 times cheaper.

I assume it would only be legal to do so if Diamond or Austro publishes the part number - and that part number is the Mercedes part number.

If it's an Austro part number, my understanding of the legalities is you must purchase the identical part number, even if it's just a Mercedes part that Austro has renumbered.

Much like the Cessna voltage regulators in the old days (and maybe still today) which were automotive (Ford-Autolite I think) VR's with a Cessna sticker on them - you could not go to your Ford dealer and buy the part.

Good info. Thanks Dave

Pretty sure they are Bosch injectors. I'll find a solid price

BTW, here's what one of the injectors removed from an Austro engine looks like (that's a US $.25 quarter in the photo for size comparison). I was surprised by how big and heavy they are.

Yeesh. Those are huge. Any visible part number on them by chance?

I don't have any spare injectors to look at anymore, but here's the part number description from Austro Engine's Maintenance Manual. Note that they explicitly provide the equivalent Daimler (Mercedes) part numbers, shown printed on each injector.

Got confirmed pricing from the shop that injectors are ~$9500 for parts alone. Just called Autozone with Bosch part numbers and got $726 an injector. Not cheap, but $6388 (incl tax) is much cheaper than $9500.
