Re: Which iPad?
I went from the mini (yes, it's an easier physical fit in almost any cockpit you could name) to the Pro 11 sometime back for these reasons. The "hot-spots" being larger helps when trying to hit them in a bouncing airplane. The Pro 11 is almost exactly twice the screen area of a mini, given the near elimination of the bezel area.
But I found a way to mount it such that it is right in front of me. It obscures nothing of importance in the instrument panel, does not interfere with controls, and does not hinder ingress/egress. Given that mine is a GNS/six-ish pack bird, the iPad (whatever genre) in-flight value is a different proposition for me than in the full glass panel birds.

Re: Which iPad?
So it doesn't have anything with age
BTW I don't have mounts so I have to use a suction cap attached to canopy in position that air from vent can additionally cool it. I find this position pretty practical when performing real IFR approaches, so you don't have to move your head a lot, keeping the eyes on needles, AI and plates at the same time. I don't get how people can put the plates on knee or anywhere out of primary vision field when flying approach in IMC.

Re: Which iPad?
A couple photos on this blog post show my iPad min in situ. I have upgraded the mount since then but the iPad has remained in, essentially, the same spot.

Re: Which iPad?
I also went for the 11“ iPad Pro which is fitted to the right hand A pillar. Totally satisfied.

Re: Which iPad?
I use an iPad mini mounted on the left side ball mount as described in my DA62. It fits perfectly, but I wouldn’t want a larger one since it obscures the controls on the left side (Tks and left fuel pump).

Re: Which iPad?
The iPad Mini mounts perfectly, not obstructing the view of either the ground below or the panel using a RAM MOUNTS Composite Double Socket Swivel & Ratchet Arm (Part #RAP-B-200-2U).
