Also, the drag of that extra scoop would be about 83% greater on a 192 kt aircraft than on a 142 kt one. I'll agree with Dave that the RACC II system does not cool as well as your car's A/C, but it gets you about 80% there, which is good enough for me and my passengers.

I think on some other planes the scoop drops down when necessary to reduce drag at cruise. No?

The air conditioning in my SR22 blows cold and keeps the cabin cool even on the ground at our home field here in Florida. It helps that multiple vents are blowing towards you from the front like in your car, not just from above and behind.ultraturtle wrote: ↑Mon May 18, 2020 4:07 pm ]"Underpowered" is relative. The system works better than any installed on a piston aircraft. Unlike other piston twins, the DA62 and DA42-VI air conditioners run off of a dedicated 70 amp alternator mounted to the left engine. Being an alternator driving an electric compressor, it outputs full power at very low rpm, meaning full cooling is available at idle or near idle power. Other aircraft use engine driven compressors, which are next to worthless when needed most - on the ground at idle power.
A/C is one thing I will really miss when I pick up my new DA42, hopefully next month. We reluctantly decided to forgo A/C in the new plane for W&B reasons.

Not if properly designed. I had a '72 Cherokee with an engine-driven factory A/C and I found it worked great at engine-idle and taxi conditions even in 100+ deg temps I encountered at Las Vegas. It had an external condenser that dropped down from the belly when it was running.ultraturtle wrote: ↑Mon May 18, 2020 4:07 pm Other aircraft use engine driven compressors, which are next to worthless when needed most - on the ground at idle power.

Dan, great that you are moving over to a DA42. Can you share your thought process moving away from the SR22?

Planning a PIREP comparing the two after I become comfortable in the new plane. At the risk of major thread drift, the primary impetus is wanting to watch the future of avgas from the cockpit of an airplane burning Jet-A.
Delivery was supposed to be this week but the factory in Austria slowed down for the coronavirus.

Dan, you might want to check this page for things you'll want to do with your Twinstar when you get it.
