Question: How does it take four people to calibrate navigational aids in a DA 62 and what instruments would those be?
Emir, what risks should ATC have been aware of? Are you implying that ATC bares some responsibility for the crash?
I don’t know why four people were on board, I guess the investigation will provide the answer.

I’m not implying anything because I don’t know any actual detail about the accident. If they were calibrating ILS on closed runway and there was traffic on parallel runway, they could’ve been affected by wake turbulence. I’m not saying if was the cause - it’s just guessing.

As per below, it is the actual airports themselves that Flight Calibration Services are calibrating for:

ILS Cat I, ILS Cat II and ILS Cat III
CVOR and DVOR
NDB, DME & VDF
MLS
TACAN
PAR
Primary / Secondary Radar
Wide Area Multi-lateration (MLAT)
ADS-B
Aeronautical Ground Lighting (AGL)
RNAV, GNSS, GPS & SBAS Validation
PAPI
Instrument Procedure Design
Worldwide Deployment Capability
Flight Inspection Equipment

KEY FEATURES
UK CAA SARG Approved
IAA Approved
CAP 670 Compliant
ICAO Doc 8071 Compliant
7 Operational Flight Inspection Aircraft (5 Diamond DA 62, 2 Piper Chieftain )
All Weather Capable
Minimal ATC Delays
Real-time and Remote Availability
Available for Rapid Deployment

They obviously have extensive equipment in the back, so two pilots are deployed for accurate flying and two in the back for operating the equipment. The reason they use the DA62 fleet is due to the quiet engines and low consumption.

There seems to be some progress in investigation unfortunately in direction I assumed.

https://www.bea.aero/en/investigation-r ... nd-da62-r/

“A Diamond DA-62 aircraft, registration mark G-MDME, was involved in a fatal accident while on approach to runway 30L of Dubai International Airport for a ground navigation equipment inspection flight. Video footage showed the aircraft encountered possible wake turbulence at about 1,100 ft, following an Airbus A350, which landed on the parallel runway 30R.”

Thanks for the update Emir,

Indeed, it looks very likely that this was the cause. Flight calibration can be very hazardous, more especially when operating at low level and at an extremely busy airport.

Shall await the official report.

This is official info, although from preliminary report. It will take some time for full report to be released. I guess BEA is included as manufacturing country of the other aircraft involved in the accident (A350).

Please find below a very informative link to a video of an accident caused by wake vortex, which has been published by BFU Germany. The more we are aware of wake vortex the better and, in this particular case, the wake vortex was generated by a 5 tonne bi-plane!!

https://www.bfu-web.de/EN/Service/V180- ... .live11294

A real eye opener and I, for one, will certainly allow sufficient time to pass after the last aircraft has taken off, before departing.......

The bea.aero link loads a blank page for me. Anyone else have this issue or know where else the preliminary report can be viewed?

It seems that they removed it or somehow hide, maybe for registered users only.

The attached Flight Global link refers to the BEA report:

https://www.flightglobal.com/news/artic ... sh-458483/

Landing A350's wake suspected in Dubai DA62 crash

27 MAY, 2019 SOURCE: FLIGHT DASHBOARD BY: DAVID KAMINSKI-MORROW LONDON
Investigators believe wake turbulence from a landing Airbus A350-900 may have contributed to the fatal crash of a light aircraft at Dubai earlier this month.

The Thai Airways International A350 had been arriving on runway 30R on 16 May, following a service from Bangkok, at around the time that the Diamond Aircraft DA62 crashed.

French investigation authority BEA, citing United Arab Emirates counterparts, says the DA62 was engaged in inspection activities for ground navigation aids.

It had been carrying out an approach to runway 30L which runs parallel to 30R.

The two runways are separated by just 380m although the threshold of 30R is displaced some 1,900m beyond of that of 30R.

“Video footage showed the [DA62] encountered possible wake turbulence at about 1,100ft, following an Airbus A350,” it says.

None of the four occupants of the DA62 survived the crash. The aircraft was UK-registered as G-MDME and was operated by Flight Calibration Services.

The company stated last November that it had secured a flight check contract for Dubai navaids.

BEA has identified the Thai A350-900 as HS-THK. The aircraft was delivered to the carrier at the end of January last year, according to Cirium’s Fleets Analyzer.
