DA62 Anti Icing Performance

It was a great day to do some practice approaches and icing conditions prevailed whenever I was in the clouds.
Total ice accumulation was about 0.75" and I spent almost exactly 30 minutes in icing conditions so that rate would work out to be middle of the road moderate conditions. I ran the system in 'normal' mode the entire time I was in icing conditions and never used a higher setting. See the following photos. The wing and tail were very clean with the exception of some small remnant on the very outboard wing and tail TKS panels. Of course, as with anything, YMMV.

Well Ron, you're giving the rest of us DA62 envy!

In one of your pictures, I couldn't help but notice the Vortex Generators installed on your DA62 (at the factory I presume). As this relates back to a thread on this subject. And as a side note, when I ordered a set of VG's for a DA42 from Micro AeroDynamics, they had just sent out a large batch of them to the factory in Canada. Which meant I had to wait several weeks for the next batch to be produced. The timing worked out fine, but in hindsight wish I had of installed them several years sooner.

Back to the topic at hand, below is a link to a recent icing presentation by a weather expert at Jepp. It might be especially helpful for those of us flying aircraft that aren't equipped with TKS. For those who missed it, I thought it was, at a minimum, an excellent refresher on this important subject:

Hello Scott,

Yes, those vortex generators are standard on the DA62. They probably help a lot in the roll stability it has at low speeds.

Also, a couple of weeks ago I did attend that Jeppesen webinar that you mention and thought it was a great presentation. I'm pretty sure the following link works without needing the course login.

Just finished watching the webinar - overall good info - kind of like getting a "masters" about icing weather, compared to what most of us learn about icing and forecasts. Worth the hour, especially if you're an "IFR" flyer! Thanks again Ron!

Hi Ron

Looking at the horizontal elevator, it appears the leading edge shows like 1“ clear ice aggregation. Or do I not see this correctly?
Why is that? If grown larger, it would pose risk for a tail stall.

I think it is an optical illusion from the reflection off of the metallic leading edge surface. There is a chunk of ice at the root of the horizontal stabilizer where it meets the forward surface and it only extends for an inch or two along the leading edge before it becomes bare metal again.

you are right; it is optical illusion. I downloaded and magnified the pic and, yes, clean leading edge.
