Max Fuel Capacity

Post by rdrobson »

In the DA40 forum there is a discussion on fuel leaking through the vents if the tanks are completely filled. Everyone has told me (and I have since confirmed) that if you fill the DA62 mains to the top, fuel will leak out so you need to stop fuel an inch or more before hitting the top of the tank.

My question: is that last bit of fuel considered to be unusable in the AFM? After all, it runs out on the ground. Or is it part of the 25 gallons of usable fuel and if so, does anyone know how much it eats into the 25 gallon usable capacity?

Thanks,

Ron

I wish Diamond would STC a little metal tab that shows the correct height to fill to.

Colin
I have found that if you fill the mains to just below the little tab which holds the retaining wire of the fuel cap it doesn’t vent. Above that it will. Not sure if the 62 has the same tabs.

I fill my DA62 main tanks just high enough to get the metal tab (to which the wire securing the filler cap is attached) "wet," but not all the way to the top. Then to be conservative, I reset the totalizer as if the tank had 24 instead of 25 gallons. But the fuel gauge for the tank usually shows it as containing the full 25 gallons.

Having never fully drained the mains to verify myself, I assume from the observation of others posting here that the fuel tank indicators are very accurate at low levels. When filling to the point of venting fuel out, I find that the gauge level plus the gallons added (as measured on the fuel truck) consistently equals one gallon more than the rated tank volume (52 gallons v 50 gallon tanks). This indicates to me that the full tank level is actually a half inch or so below the silver filler ring.

On the DA42, I found that the leakage only occurs on the right hand tank. I can fill the left hand tank to the top without losing any fuel, but if the right hand tank is fueled above the tab (as mentioned in other posts) it will always leak out the vent.

I wish that were the case on ours. The metal tab on one side is bent and doesn't match the other side. Would have been nice to have official "tabs" though.
