Cost of WAAS upgrade on a G1000

Post by Tom Davis »

I have a 2005 DA40 with a G1000 without WAAS. I would appreciate any information any of you might have to upgrade to WAAS capability.

Thanks,

You'll need to replace both GIA63 units in the rear G1000 equipment rack with identical-looking GIA63W units to get WAAS.

Unfortunately Garmin charges about $20K for this upgrade.

The good news is that this will let you fly GPS RNAV LPV and LP approaches to lower minimums, and you'll have a WAAS position source for future ADS-B OUT solutions such as replacing your GTX33 transponder with a GTX33ES unit, or installing one of the less expensive GDL88/84 models without integral WAAS -- to meet the FAA's 2020 ADS-B mandate. (Note that Diamond/Garmin have yet to certify either of these ADS-B units for the DA40 G1000.)

Thanks Dave. I guess I will do without WAAS for the time being.
