Re: FS 210 follies
Rich- Thanks, I'll try those tests. Re still using the Stratus, I have a Garmin GDL-88 that will be providing input. Unfortunately, the FF Q&A section says "Pilots with a Flight Stream 210 and a Garmin ADS-B In source, or a Garmin GTX345 ADS-B In transponder, should not simultaneously connect to a Stratus receiver due to potential for "competition" between the ADS-B weather and traffic sources." I questioned FF support about this and their answer was "Technically you can connect ForeFlight Mobile EFB to a Flight Stream 210 (FS210) and your Stratus 2S at the same time because the FS210 uses Bluetooth and the Stratus 2S uses Wi-Fi. However, it is not recommended to connect to two ADS-B sources to ForeFlight Mobile EFB at the same time." Bernie

I'd agree with this. In my case I don't have a second ADS-B in device, so no conflict.blsewardjr wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 9:49 pm Rich- Thanks, I'll try those tests. Re: FS 210 follies
One interesting oddity involves the AHRS "calibrate" action.
For doing so with the Stratus, there are two options: zero out pitch and bank OR fine-adjust with these little arrows. The latter works better if I want to set this on the ground, because my plane sits about 5 deg nose up, so I can synch the AHRS with the mechanical AI, which is right at level in normal flight.
But the FS210 only offers the "zero out pitch and bank" option. So to set it on the ground I have to do something like jack the aircraft tail up to set it. In flight, of course, I can do it any time, but it can an elusive function flying in a cold air mass below a heavy broken layer of non-trivial cumulus clouds

Re: FS 210 follies
This was the final installation, correcting for the interference with the instrument panel cover:

Re: FS 210 follies
The difference in scaling between my iron-gyro AI and the Foreflight AHRS display takes a bit of getting used to. Notably in pitch.
The 3" mechanical AI has a 1/8" span between 0 and 5 deg nose up deck angle. The FF display is 5/8". My normal climb (~500 FPM) lurks in the neighborhood of 3 deg, so we're looking at just over 1/16" on the mechanical vs. 3/8" on the iPad. This difference is so obvious I find myself double-checking that the iPad is in agreement with the "real" AI. The flip side is that even minor variances in deck angle (like even 1/4 degree, common in even slight turbulence) wouldn't show on the mechanical but are visible in FF.
I've long been entertained by the obstacle clearance display in the Synthetic Vision in FF. It will show that Mt. Hood is a hazard when it's 100 nm away

Re: FS 210 follies
Hey Rich, did you have FS210 installed on your Da40?? How does it work out? I'm very interested to have one installed but got shot down by Garmin since they said it's not compatible with G1000

Re: FS 210 follies
I’ve had a FS210 for the past 21 months on my 2002 DA40, and it has been worth every penny. When my CFI is putting me through the paces in our instrument proficiency lessons, the FS210 allows me to quickly load the next flight plan/procedure. Sure I can use the Direct2 button and dials, but using ForeFlight and the FS210 is more efficient for me. It’s almost like I have a Cirrus Perspective keyboard since my iPad allows me to quickly make changes to a clearance.
While I have had some flights where the iPad and the FS210 have not paired, I mitigate that issue to some degree by carrying my fully charged Stratus as a backup for the traffic, AHRS, and weather backup.
