FS 210 follies

Post by Rich »

After a month of trying this and that with this unit in combination with Foreflight and GNS 530W:

AHRS has been touchy. Jury is still out, but I think it's mostly OK after tweaking the installation a bit. I need to test more. If flakiness continues will try a swap-out while it's still under warranty.

I have determined that I have trouble loading certain approached from FF -> 530 in which entering the same approach into the 530 and reverse-copying to FF works fine. So far the only situation I found where this happens is for ALL RNAV approaches into Victoria, BC (CYYJ). Both ILS approaches work fine. Foreflight support has NOT been able to reproduce this problem. I've tested several other RNAV approaches, including one at Vancouver, BC (CYYR), without a problem. FF support still investigating.

One needs to be a bit patient on start up with respect to GPS data support to FF. The unit gets its GPS information from the 530W, and it takes a bit longer for this certified unit boot up and be satisfied with its data than, say, the Stratus 3 I also have operating. Not a big deal, we're talking between 30-45 seconds.

Using the iPhone to transfer FP can produce "interesting" results  . I'll limit it to the iPad. iPhone is linked to the Stratus WiFi only.

I'm supposed to have a FS210 installed at my annual next week but I'm beginning to have my doubts.

I wouldn't go that far. I've not seen any problems in anything else I've tested that replicates the weirdness (and so far, unique problem) of the CYYJ RNAV approaches. FF is still looking into it.

It would be interesting to see if anyone else has encountered any specific behaviors of their units. Mine might, in fact, be defective.

Also, make sure this is NOT the position it gets mounted, as the mounting screws for the connector impinge on the instrument cover. Just a bit lower on the panel is fine.

Thanks! Is that ledge on which it sits standard or something you added? How did you lower it?

The shop fabricated it. Flipped it upside down and mounted the gizmo “inside” it.

FF support asked me to perform some additional FP transfer tests. One of them was this:

Create a route from KAUS to KCHS and then add the RNAV (GPS) Y RWY 21 with the BAMDE IAF.

I think they expected it to fail and, indeed, it did. They continue to investigate. I'd like those with Connext in whatever form to give this a try and see if the problem repeats on your system. That is, create in FF (or Garmin Pilot) and try to copy to your panel.
Thanks.

The AHRS issue is now resolved. The unit was defective. Replaced today and the replacement works as expected. 8)

Rich- Any tips on what to test once it's installed? Mine was finished today, but I'm waiting on a mag change from my annual so it will probably be next week before I get the plane back.

First pair you iPad with it. Then:

1. You do not need to fly to test this: Construct a flight plan in FF and press the copy icon. There's a new choice to copy to "panel". Push that and the "Msg" deal on the GNS unit will flash. The message will say there's a new flight plan waiting. There's a new, third flight plan page where you accept the flight plan and voila. It'll show in the GNS unit. Amend it and repeat, the revised FP will be available to update the in the GNS, Change in the GNS and you'll see an alert in FF that it's been revised and the change will be reflected in FF. Note that there are some failure cases I've noted, regarding certain RNAV approaches. This is still unresolved but it's by no means widespread. It would be helpful if you could try to repeat one of the failures I noted.

2. In flight, display the AHRS/SVT on the map. See how well the attitude comports with your actual AI. Note that, like the Stratus, you'll need to do a calibrate function as desired to adjust to your desired .

You can leave both the Stratus and FS210 operating. The FS210 preempts the Stratus for GPS position and AHRS function. But the Stratus provides the ADS-B input and FF works seamlessly to properly integrate the two input streams.
