Vandenberg, Approaches, and Rock & Roll (Full ATC)

Today Levi and I fly a long low approach at Vandenberg AFB, shoot an RNAV at San Luis Obispo going missed, and drop into Oceano for a rockin’ breakfast. Thanks for flying with us. Wayne, GeezerGeek Pilot

When/how did you make the request for the approach? From ATC on the fly?

Russ, two ways:

(a) On initial call to Clearance Delivery (or Ground), let them know what you'd like to do... they pass that info on to Departure/Approach. In this video, we asked for VFR flight following to KSBP, with a low approach along the way at KVBG (if able). Soon after takeoff and talking to Departure they work us into KVBG.

-or-

(b) Takeoff normally, then when underway request of Departure/Approach the low approach at KVBG.

Obviously being able to shoot the approach (without touching down) is a time available thing... and the KVBG tower needs to be open. But I've had good luck (>50/50) during business hours weekdays getting it approved.

But a fun thing to do, and the KVBG controllers have always been very pleasant.

Cheers,
Wayne
