VFR to Big Bear for a Snowy Lunch (Full ATC)

Post by waynemcc999 »

On this clear, crisp morning we’re off to Big Bear to enjoy an early snow in the mountains. And wow, does Levi’s C182 love the thick air, on one of those rare days where density altitude equals pressure altitude. Thanks for flying with us. Wayne, GeezerGeek Pilot

Nice !
I've been thinking about flying into Tahoe TVL from FMN about 3 hrs.
I assume Big Bear keeps RW's clear of snow?

Also the benefit of FULL ATC all the way seems like a pain with all the handoffs
Guess its necessary to clear all the traffic around LAX

Finally .. curious how many cameras you're using & placement
and what software you use to edit

I've got one GoPro on the wing to share highlights with my Fam

Gary, thanks for watching!

Regarding South Lake Tahoe (KTVL), my suggested arrival corridors are... from the east, over highways NV207 or US50... from the west, over I80 (not US50, as it's a steep canyon with no options for a forced landing). Or, better yet, instead go to Truckee (KTRK).

Yes, Big Bear Airport seems to do a decent job of snow removal... now the streets in town, not so much.

Just a habit, for added safety, to fly VFR with flight following. In areas with reasonable radio coverage, we tend to do flight following in lieu of filing a VFR flight plan (which only goes to Flight Services for SAR purposes).

Other than my iPhone for occasional images/video clips, I only use 1 GoPro camera, and I use a strategy of "set it and forget it". Here's a list of the hardware and software I use:

Thanks again for checking in!

What I love about flying in SoCal, if you really would like some snow, then you have to go looking for it. :)
