Smoky IFR into Long Beach with Levi - PilotsNPaws (Full ATC)

Post by waynemcc999 »

The day and evening before, 90 mph Santa Ana winds ignited two infernos east of Los Angeles. And today tiny Lola needs to get to Long Beach for emergency spinal surgery. Despite the bumps and smoke, it was a morning spent flying for a very good cause. Wayne, GeezerGeek Pilot

Thanks Wayne for your Pilots & Paws flights. Yep, in the last four weeks or so, I have more experience flying in heavy smoke than my 18 years of previous flying. Photo: Entering smoke cloud over Huntington Beach coastline just after departing John Wayne Airport.

Thanks, Don. The original PnP posting was to deliver the dog to John Wayne Airport, but we decided that would put our approach directly downwind of the fires... and therefore we requested that the ground transport meet us at Long Beach.
Hoping we get thru the rest of this fire season.

Just one thing to add. After flying through heavy smoke for a long duration, it is not a bad idea to clean your engine's air intake filter. I pulled my filter off and used compressed air to clean. Lots of very fine ash dust came out.
