Just started fling with my 1 yr Lab... he just sleeps

You might notice that she is wearing earmuffs in the pictures.

We started with Mutt Muffs, but found them to be poorly shaped to our dog's skull, and lacking in quality of the inner cup sound suppression foam and the ear seal foam and flexible plastic. Her hearing being far more sensitive than ours, she was a bit antsy on our first flight.

We found the K-9 Ear Muffs from 4 Paws Aviation to be far superior in all respects:

In addition to the K-9 Muffs, we place cotton balls in her ears before flight and she is now as happy and calm as can be.

4 Paws provides excellent instructions to gradually get your dog used to wearing them. Most brilliant idea that never occurred to me was to let her hear how loud the engines are before placing the muffs on, so she can appreciate their benefit. Our mutt never tolerated anything on her head for long until we went through this exercise. It works.

One more thing - bring a stuffed bone for your dog to chew on during descent, so she can clear her ears.

Don't waste your money. I bought a well known brand of Doggie ear muffs for my previous dog. All they do is make the owner feel better about taking the dog along. We took apart one of the ear muffs and tested the sound reduction in our audio lab where I work. Less than 1.4 db effective. Just sayin.

Maybe a modified Headset so the pet can hear your voice while flying. No need for mic. My dog talks too much anyway.

If you don't need the mic, any standard stereo headphones would work, too. Find a pair with decent passive noise reduction, and then you could also talk to your pet if needed for reassurance.

Yep...it's a dogs life. Our rescue dog, "Lucky", has close to 500 hours of flight time. He is very relaxed flying and normally just sleeps. When we pull back the throttle for decent, he wakes ups and starts looking out the window knowing we will be landing soon. He also has good sea legs too. Lucky travels with us most of the time via air or ocean. He's spoiled but brings a lot of joy to my wife and I.
