IFR Approaches - "We're just up havin' fun" (Full ATC)

3vE3eJzKQA8 Today good friend Blake and I shoot a couple approaches through the marine layer. As we approached the first final approach course we were too fast in trail of a Cherokee, so received a vector back around… and then 3 scheduled flights got priority... so back around, and back around agai...

Re: ForeFlight & Garmin Pilot: Side-by-Side - Part 3: VFR to Big Bear

A feature of FF I always use when I'm really going anywhere is what I term the Flights lifecycle. Creating/modifying/briefing/filing (propagation among devices). Followed by loading to FPL, copying to GNS which drives Aspen/AP, modifying in flight. Flights can be created months ahead in initial pla...

ForeFlight & Garmin Pilot: Side-by-Side - Part 3: VFR to Big Bear

Today Jan and I continue (as friends 🙂) our short series, on another real-life flight, this time VFR to Big Bear. Welcome aboard! If you've used both of these market-leading products, what are your experiences and opinions? Wayne, GeezerGeek Pilot

Re: G1000 Data Logging

This is probably a good place to mention https://www.flysto.net as a resource for analyzing your G1000-captured flight information. Other options are Flight Data (https://www.flightdata.com/) and Cloud Ahoy (https://www.cloudahoy.com/). FlySto has recently added some nice analytics for takeoffs and...

Re: ForeFlight & Garmin Pilot: Side-by-Side - Part 2: Bench Test

Dave, I think you hit the key comparative points very well! Regarding user interface... before starting with ForeFlight about 8 years ago, I had first used WingX for 6 months or so. Found WingX to be strong on functionality (at the time) but super klutzy on user interface. As you noted, ForeFlight i...

Re: ForeFlight & Garmin Pilot: Side-by-Side - Part 2: Bench Test

Refreshingly this discussion doesn't get into the foolish subject of price considerations or religious issues ("I hate Apple") that I see rampant in other social media posts. My flying costs if I never turn the key in the airplane and assuming nothing whatsoever fails run above $8K plus. ...

In Part 1 of this short series, we observed these two products side-by-side on a real-life IFR-to-VFR flight. Now in Part 2, Jan leads us on a more controlled Bench Test. Welcome back! Wayne, GeezerGeek Pilot

Re: Anyone fly to Cuba?

Logan, yes, with two best buds we flew my DA40 to Cuba in March 2016... here's a summary video: FJ-zHglpKsw I'm not current on the limitations the US Treasury may or may not have for GA travel, so you'll have to check that out yourself. All I can say is that in 2016 this was a very doable trip... an...

Destination Tip: A Long Weekend in Álamos, Sonora, Mexico

rwLYhi86f00 Looking for a weekend adventure? Álamos, south of the border, just might be a great fit. This small foothill village is one of a few dozen Pueblos Mágicos and known throughout Mexico for its authentic charm. And for those departing small GA from the US Southwest, you're landing Álamos a...
