Re: Optimal landing speed

Landings seem to occupy a special place in aviation and in our minds. Lately, I have been flying an Eclipse 500 with a former USAF B1 safety instructor who also flew missions in the Middle East. His landings are textbook perfect but he notes that the trailing landing gear makes landings look better ...

Re: Optimal landing speed

When I look back on the greasers that made me look like I knew what I was doing, virtually all of them were at near max weight or at night. Has anyone else seen this tendency in landing the DA40? Thinking about night landings in other aircraft, they have not been any more liklely to be good or bad t...

Re: Loudspeaker 4 or 8 Ohm?

The ideal speaks for that application would have a mylar cone and be restricted to mid-range frequency response. Such speakers are common in ham radio and similar transceivers designed for outdoor use. The have a narrow frequency response that optimizes the voice range and suppresses higher and lowe...

Re: Loudspeaker 4 or 8 Ohm?

What is blowing out on these speakers? Is it the voice coil (zero ohms across terminals) or is it degraded cone material and/or suspension rim?

Re: Keeping CHT temps in range on climb-out

My temporary highs seem to be close to 410 F. when I lose track of them due to traffic, ATC, etc. I'm going to quit worrying about those as well. I'm also learning to slow down and enjoy the scenery flying LOP. CHTs are <300 and I'm around 130 kts. at less than 6 GPH. Not a bad ride.

Re: Keeping CHT temps in range on climb-out

Taking standard definitions for high performance and economy, they are saying it is destructive to your cylinders to operate at 434 degrees at 55-65% power but OK to operate at 434 degrees at 75-80% power. Does that make sense? Is there something about the mechanics of higher power that makes it saf...

Re: Keeping CHT temps in range on climb-out

Kurt -- All of this makes sense except the max temp guidance being higher for high power cruise than for low power cruise. As with EGT, lower power settings produce less pressure, uneven spot heat, etc.

Re: Keeping CHT temps in range on climb-out

My CHTs have been steadily creeping up over the years during climb out. I’m sure my 2000 hr baffling is getting a bit stiff with some air gaps. If I maintain best climb during summer (in Houston!), temps will climb to about 405-410 F. Used to be 380 F. about 1000 hrs ago. For what it’s worth, I hav...

Re: Cirrus Jet reviewed...

The Microsoft whiz kids skipped a few important beats getting the Eclipse to the market and past the second greatest recession in history. My points go to performance and features per dollar, whether purchase price or hourly. Spec for spec, the 500 is closer to the Honda and you can pick up a 500 wi...
