Re: IFR / What should I have done?
Russ, Ilya's original post at the top of this thread included: "I was told to proceed direct SMO VOR (and then to depart that on a particular heading)" ... this to me is a fly-over, i.e. go to SMO (all the way), THEN depart on a given heading (very much like my SoCal TEC route instruction)...

Re: IFR / What should I have done?
I've been bitten by the fly-by waypoint behavior a couple of times. I don't know if there's a better way, but I've learned to just peek at the MFD to see when it's going to turn early and switch into HDG mode on the present heading if I don't want to cut the corner. Since you were going to be on a ...

Re: GFC700 autopilot overshoot turning to a heading
Steve, since the FD appears to be having difficulty (as opposed to the autopilot itself) it could be that Russ is onto something with the magnetometer. Hopefully there is a Garmin Aviation service center in the Vegas area that can investigate. Good luck and keep us updated, Wayne BTW -- likely not r...

Russ,
The images below of Collapse-Airways are from X-Plane 11, but are the same as on my DA40 G1000 (non-NXi).

Re: NXi and airways
Russ, I've also gotten this BORED clearance update when going that direction. And as you note, on the non-NXi G1000 the airway does show up expanded, and I just selected BORED and then Direct. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever had success with the inverse issue, i.e. "collapsing airways" on ...

Wayne- What's your new prop? Bernie Bernie, a 1 to 1 replacement of what I had... an MT 3-bladed composite. During annual I had the original 1800 hour prop sent out for overhaul... they found corrosion in the hub... there was a 22 week backlog for a new hub, and "only" 12 week wait for a ...

4K! Did you shoot that with the iPhone or GoPro? Russ, yes, both... the view toward the panel is the GoPro (4K), and the iPhone (4K) is used for (a) view of occupants and (b) view out the right wing side. I agree with your observation... the iPhone 12 Pro has more vivid image quality than the GoPro...

To File or Not to File (IFR, that is) - Lancaster CA (Full ATC)
UsKYPej6qmg We’re finally back in the Diamond Star today (smooth new prop and all), giving Levi and his dad Bill a lift to Lancaster. A bit of a nervous flyer, Bill is hoping that the crew upfront can make this an enjoyable flight. Looks like VFR would probably work, but there’s an AIRMET for IFR a...
