Re: A heretical proposition
I wrote off radar altimeters years ago due to vulnerability to realities of terrain in the latter stages of approaches... ...as did the TERPS folks. That is why they will never create CATII or CATIII approaches to radio altimeter mins at either of these runways. They know what they're doing. When s...

Re: A heretical proposition
No approach to low minimums with external glide path guidance that I have ever flown (ILS, PAR, LPV, GLS, etc) has ever relied on on the same technology to define both approach guidance and the decision height/altitude. The decision to go missed is always based on either baro or radio altimeter - co...

Re: A heretical proposition
I suppose it all comes down to specs. WAAS specs allow for over 5 minutes of downtime per year. Mom Nature allows for approximately 0.000000 minutes of downtime per year for the atmosphere.

Re: Checklist for DA62
Personally, I greatly prefer the abbreviated checklists provided by Diamond Aircraft. They are always up to date (latest revision May 2021): https://www.diamondaircraft.com/en/service-and-support/diamond-flight-training/checklists/ At every update, I print, laminate, punch, then bind with 5/16"...

Re: Best products for cleaning the plane
Thread drift: What do people do to clean their panels (I see what is allowed, curious what people are actually using)? Certainly bugs filling the holes is just as bad as the wax possibly filling them. To drift even further… I prefer to clean the panels from the inside out, i.e. run the system. Bett...

Re: Best products for cleaning the plane
Pledge does appear to contain silicon. I can't remember where I suggested using it, but in the past I have used it on the FIKI panels on the leading edge... Bad idea. From Chapter 8 of the DA42 AFM Supplement S03 (bold emphasis added by me): 8. AIRPLANE HANDLING, CARE AND MAINTENANCE The porous pan...

DA62 Pocket Organizer
I find the small Grid-It handy to hold my CO detector, Leatherman, flashlight, spare pens and bulbs:
It fits perfectly in the slim DA62 pocket, with plenty of room for a pulse oximeter and piddle-pack:

Re: Adding the VNAV button
I use VNAV for pretty much every descent. If told to descend prior to the computed Top Of Descent point, I simply start down at 500 ft/min with the VNAV armed. Once the aircraft intercepts the programmed VNAV profile, it intercepts that vertical path. This keep the aircraft as high as possible, as l...

Re: ECU 'gotcha' in my DA62
Most pilots get surprised by this... while the warnings of landing above 7500 ft are in the POH, I don't believe their in the official checklists. The "official" checklist isn't really all that official - its second paragraph states: This checklist is a Recommended Operator Checklist and ...
