Re: Lithium Battery pack in the airplane

I only use smaller LiOn battery packs from large name brands to reduce the chance of a short circuit due to poor QA or manufacturing. If I was to get a larger one, I would buy a Lithium battery fire bag and keep the battery in there. LiOn batteries have thermal runaway events that start when chargin...

Re: DA42 vs BeechA36 or Cirrus for long distance

I have demoed and flown in a DA-42 a number of times. I have owned a SR20 and SR22, and spent a lot of time in Bonanzas. For travel outside of the USA, the DA-42 wins every single time from a fuel availability standpoint. From a comfort perspective, a SR22 is if not the loudest SEP in the mass marke...

Re: G1000 NXi Phase III

@pietromarx There is an upgrade paths available for some G1000 planes: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/aviation/G1000-NXi-flight-deck-upgrade-for-select-cessna-piston-singles/ So far, neither Diamond nor Garmin has addressed this issue. My understanding is that Textron worked with Garmin to due the STC...

Re: DA62 Options Selection

Mine is in production now (so I'm told), and didn't order the preheater. My dealer said it's a waste of money since the engines start in temps down to something like -20°F or some crazy low temp, without preheat. I live in Reno and when I returned home from Scottsdale this afternoon it was 35 degre...

Re: DA62 Options Selection

I prefer Reiff over Tanis based on price, warranty and ease of installation. But basically, unless if you only fly in Texas and avoid the cold snaps a couple weeks long each year, a pre-heat system makes sense for most of us.

Re: Diamond Quality

Hayes, Wow, you have had some bad luck. I am a member of COPA, I have owned an SR20, SR22, and an Aerostar. Neither Cirrus would I consider maintenance heavy, in fact the Cessna 182 a friend bought had much longer and more painful maintenance than the Cirrus on a regular basis. The engine aspects we...

Re: G1000 NXi Phase III

I bought a DA-40 in 2003. The second with a G1000. What was true then is true today. Virtually the same words and conversations from the customers and ... silence from Diamond. This is perhaps why everyone I know says buy EAB versus certificated if possible and never, ever, anything with an integra...

Re: Economics of keeping plane in a hangar

I have previously done the same calculation. If you do a lot of your own MX, or have weather that makes usage of the plane problematic at certain times of the year (e.g. summer in Texas, New England in Winter) those can become major factors. Otherwise, if near a major city from a straight line opera...

Welcome! Enjoy the new planes, they are a treat to fly.
Just curious, what is the plan with the older C172 planes?
