Re: Curmudgeon speaks out on our wussy airplanes

I have a tailwheel endorsement, in fact I flew a Piper Cub two weeks ago, though I would not consider myself particularly skilled at it. I do believe that experienced tailwheel pilots have more skill at flying difficult to control aircraft. I completely respect them for that; they can safely fly air...

Re: Landing katama in a 40

I have landed at Katama in a DA20. Easy. No wheel pants. The "grass" runway was as hard as a rock so I wouldn't fret the soft field aspect. It does have bumps so do be careful of the wheel pants and prop. It is probably safest to remove them first (wheel pants, not prop).

No, I didn't see that. Thanks for the link. I'll give it a try.

Re: DA20-A1 battery low volts after 6 months

I found the Yuasa batteries problematic too. When I had my A1, I kept two batteries, one on the plane and one on a Battery Minder. Swapped them when the one in the plane got weak.

Re: DA42 rental

It's been a while since I asked, so I'll try again in case things have changed. Anyone know of a DA42 at a flight school in the vicinity of Boston?

Re: Counting instrument approaches

I count every instrument approach to minimum, most VMC. I log every filed IFR flight. Clouds or no clouds. I would never keep current otherwise. Too many cold days with ice and summer TCUs. I got may rating without any actual instrument approaches I presume i can stay current the same way. Love to ...

Re: Counting instrument approaches

In 2015 the FAA legal counsel issued a letter addressing logging instrument approaches -- https://www.faa.gov/other_visit/aviation_industry/airline_operators/airline_safety/info/all_infos/media/2015/InFO15012.pdf Yes, this is what I have been going by. This is much better than the common belief pri...

Re: Counting instrument approaches

At my airport it is a pretty narrow window between 1000' and not getting in. I am confused. The RNAV FAF (CUPUG) at OWD is 1700, and even the LNAV is 600 (LPV is 350). Chris I'm actually at KLWM not KOWD anymore, thanks for the reminder to update my profile. :) Maybe I've been interpretin...

Re: Recent Factory Visit

That's sad. I really like the DA20's, even the original Rotax model. I think if Diamond had really tried they could have had a monopoly on the flight training market. In 1996, it looked like that would be true. Now 20 years later DA20's are all but extinct at flight schools. And what replaced them? ...
