Re: Engine reliability
It's still hard to beat the quiet, smoothness, fuel economy, and ease of operation when flying behind Austro engine(s). So my pilot wife has dry leased hours on a DA40NG, allowing us to continue enjoying flight in an Austro-powered plane -- but without being an owner responsible for any of the poten...

Re: Engine reliability
Nice plane, but the MU2 requires a certain discipline to fly due to its very high wing loading, combined with roll spoilers instead of ailerons. Fortunately the special training the FAA mandates for the MU2 seems to have addressed the previously-high fatality rate: https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pk...

Re: 1,800 Hr Inspection Costs
Because my DA42-VI N42DA (bought new in 2013) was only a year out of warranty in 2016, Austro was nice enough to cover the head replacement cost -- so I don't know how expensive it was. The right engine had developed an unstable RPM in cruise that (after the head was removed) was determined to have ...

Re: 1,800 Hr Inspection Costs
Yes, the AvWeb article you mentioned is correct: Austro is now building their own core engines since they used up their supply of Mercedes-Benz OM640 engines upon which the AE300/AE330 engines are based. Austro was forced to go back and find suppliers who could re-create parts used by older Mercedes...

Re: New fuel pump requires Prist below +5C
Flying a P&W PT6A-powered single-engine turboprop instead of a DA62, I'm now forced to use JetA+ with Prist: Outside temps at FL340 are as low as -54degC in the winter. But unfortunately this does limit where I can land and refuel, since multiple smaller airports (e.g., those with self-serve Jet...

Really nice video, with great use of the MFD electronic checklist on the DA42. I look forward to more...

Re: Canada ADS-B Diversity Requirement
Here are my results from a DA62. I think I failed. I wonder if signal transmission through the carbon fiber of the DA62 is more difficult than the DA40 fiberglass. Too bad it's mounted under the relatively crowded cockpit vs. the tail. Yes, that's why an external ELT antenna is needed on the carbon...

Re: DA40 XLS EMI (electromagnetic interference) vs WiFi & Bluetooth
WiFi and Bluetooth both can use the same 2.4 GHz frequency band. Do you have any other WiFi or Bluetooth communications (e.g., with Bluetooth headsets) going on at the same time as you're trying to control your camera?

Re: Side by side drag race between DA42VI and DA62
Interesting "drag race." A few years ago I graphed the AFM/POH published speeds of DA42 and DA62 models using "maximum continuous power:" DA42vDA62 Performance.pdf rather than full power (good for only 5 minutes) that was demonstrated in the video. At max continuous power, the DA...

Re: Where to buy 100h supplies for DA42NG?
The Austro engine is based on a Mercedes OM640 diesel engine, so you could always try searching online for a Mercedes-Benz oil filter (probably produced for Mercedes by MANN) for that model engine. Years ago when I last bought the 100 hour kit from Diamond, it included the Mercedes oil filter contai...
