Re: Transponder Mode During Taxi

I too have a GTX33, and I always let it switch modes automatically. The only time I have ever had a controller specifically ask for me to switch it to ALT mode (it was in ground mode) was when I was taxiing for departure at Dulles. You will see a note on IAD's airport diagram which states "ASDE...

Breakaway extension cable for preheater

Has anyone had any success in finding a breakaway power cable for a pre-heater? I'm concerned that I, or someone else, will catch the cable and do damage to the engine cowling or worse...

Re: Approach Question

Coming from someone with a KAP140 equipped G1000, it is my understanding that the autopilot will track laterally only in the given scenario. "NAV" is a lateral only mode, (to be used with ALT, ALT-ARM, or VS). The autopilot only receives a signal that is analogous to an HSI. It does not kn...

Re: Replacing back-up Attitude Indicator

Looking into purchasing the RCA2600-3 to replace the backup in my '06 G1000 DA40. The original L3 model I have now always reads about 8 degrees higher pitch up than is accurate. Starting to look at future replacement models. Does anyone know what tilt the panel is? I had the instrument panel cover o...

Re: Annual Cost Average

The first annual I had performed on my '06 DA40 was around $6500. There were A LOT of little things that required fixing. The prior owner had performed only the "minimum" maintenance required, so there were a lot of little items that required attention to bring the plane up to my standards...

G1000 wind indicator

When I am flying around in my '06 DA40, I often notice that if I make a 180 degree turn, the ambient wind indication on the G1000 does not reverse. For example, it is common for me to be flying one direction with an indicated 20kt headwind or so, and if I make a 180° turn, it will show something lik...

Thousand Islands

Yesterday, I took a day trip (40 min flight each way) from Lake Placid, NY (LKP) to Watertown (KART) to visit the Thousand Islands region. The folks at Watertown's FBO were very friendly and helpful. The reserved rental car was waiting for us when we arrived (about $60 for a small SUV, cheaper for a...

Re: Prop Cycling On Run-Up

One time I did not cycle the prop during the run-up, and noticed during takeoff that the engine revved to >2700 for a second before returning back to the usual 2660. Never saw this happen before, or since, when I cycle the prop. I can only assume that this was caused by colder, more viscous, oil in ...

Re: Garmin SB1334! -3letter identifier WAAS fix, checklist,

I had my DA40 upgraded from a legacy G1000 system (circa 2006) to the current .22 version. Took about 1.5 hours to do the entire procedure, which included updates to some of the other G1000 components. Can not imagine this update taking anywhere near 4-6 hours.
