Re: Non-WAAS G1000 -- ADS-B Future

I too have a non-waas G1000 DA-40. Looking at the Navworx site their ADS600-B transceiver ($1,999) is currently AML STC'd for the DA-40. Neither the Freeflight transmitter or transceiver options are STC'd for the DA-40 according to the FAA STC database at this time. The NAVWORX solution appears less...

Oil Filter Removal Procedure/Device

Anybody willing to share their favorite method and/or homemade device for removing the oil filter on the DA-40 without making a big mess on the back of the engine case or floor at oil change time. I'm bound and determined to start doing my own oil changes and save the $250 bucks, not to mention beco...

Re: Keeping tire pressures correct

I would echo Steve's advice to keep spare tubes in the plane. I fly in the Western US and land at some small places. The DA-40 tube must not be a common size and is therefore never in stock when I have had a flat. In my first 100 or so hours with the plane I must have had four flats including a blow...

Re: DA40 on Dirt Strips

That's odd John...you would think same airframe, same engine, same performance? I flew mine tonight with a full load and yep 144 ground speed at about 4500 msl. Wonder what's up with yours. I wish that we could get that IO-390 STC'd for the DA-40 on TBO.... That extra HP might make all the differenc...

Re: DA40 on Dirt Strips

John,
If you are heading this way let me know. August sometimes has some cool (near freezing) and spectacular mornings in the back country. Great flying.

Robert...the P-Ponk just climbs... Sorry they are so noisy!

Re: DA40 on Dirt Strips

My DA-40 has the two blade hartzell propeller and standard exhaust. I flight plan cross country flights at 135kts but consistently see 140+. Yesterday was a good example... flight back from Las Vegas with a 5-9kt headwind and I consistently saw groundspeeds right at 143kts on the 3 hourish trip. It ...

Re: Very Cold Start

Red Dragon makes a totally self contained ducted engine heater on a hand truck for $568 at Aircraft Spruce. Uses a 12v auto battery to drive the blower. They say with a cowling bonnet it can heat your engine in 20 minutes. Don't know if that's true but seems like a good option for the no electric ac...

Re: DA40 on Dirt Strips

Johnu, Another Idahoan here...I see RWTucker provided some good advice. My guess is your DA-40 would do OK with Smiley Creek and Johnson Creek wheel wise here in Idaho. Both are long well maintained grass strips. Stanley airport which is mostly pavement, some gravel would probably work just fine. Th...

Re: DA-40 Recommended Service - Popcorn Insulation

Thanks for the attachment Gary...that's it...my mechanic is ordering the seal from Diamond. Fun weekend...battery terminal connector on the alternator broke halfway between nowhere and the outer edge of nowhere, when I got back I noticed my left main gear wheel pant had a 12 inch crack and to top it...
