I have Garmin inReach. Satellite based and will work with a view of the sky from the cockpit. It has texting. No talking. Monthly plans start at $15/mo. The device itself cost around $400.

Re: What states have no light aircraft sales tax
You might check Kansas. I have heard people will fly there to take physical delivery of an airplane. I am not a tax advisor nor do I play one on TV.

Re: SureFly Electronic Ignition
Yes I agree it probably wasn't surefly. It seems like the Cirrus guys have dabbled in electronic ignition and it didn't go well. That's just a guess.

Re: Oil Pan Heater - limit to time of use?
I have this:
https://switcheon.com/power-switch/
its a remote on/off that you use with an app on your phone. I turn the engine heater on from home, several hours before my flight.

Re: SureFly Electronic Ignition
Question for those that have Surefly, I talked to a mechanic who didn't recommend surefly because they had experience with a situation where one of the electronic ignitions took out both EI's. I was all set to put at least one on, but if the mechanic doesn't embrace it, then it's hard to move forwar...

Re: New member introduction & takeaways
Airwolf, My initial reaction is that you need more than 20 gals to get anywhere. I wouldn't begin your calculation with half tanks as the norm. If once in a blue moon the situation demands a half fuel load.. then that's what you have to do. But I wouldn't go into this thinking everytime you take a f...

AirWolf, Being that your grandfather was a B-17 tail gunner, you should come to the Champaign Aviation Museum in Ohio (NE of Dayton Ohio) located at i74 Grimes Field. It would ...

Re: Fueling Questions
Bryan,
If you are unsure where to put the ground, on any airplane you can connect the ground wire to the exhaust pipe.
On the fueling, I go slow and angle the nozzle inboard into the tank. Occasionally, I will "burp" the tank by gently rocking the wing up and down.

Don:
As similar to others, I too have had the flaps fail. It was a non-event. You may float a bit more.
BTW, I do my Flight Review in a twin, and literally 100% of the time I get an abnormal landing with no-flaps.

Re: How to plan a fuel stop?
Rob,
Use this online tool for US airports
https://www.airnav.com/plan/fuel/
For Canada, US and parts of Mexico
turn on FBO fuel detail in the right side panel (click on layers menu)
https://skyvector.com/
Internationally you might try fltpln.com
