Re: The glaring weaknesses in flight training
So what happens when one of these events happens without the pilot intending to do so - especially when you're all tensed up close to the ground? Startle/freeze and maybe crash/die. As if on cue for this discussion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5yt3lCQtSM Sad to watch... Actually it was the cue...

Re: The glaring weaknesses in flight training
I agree about simulators - at least the ones available for our light GA planes. They're laughably incompetent at emulating flight characteristics. But if full-screen simulators could be made available that faithfully emulated flight characteristics perhaps these might be a big help. You could have a...

The glaring weaknesses in flight training
Recent safety presentations from FAA, EAA, AOPA, etc. have started focusing on the "startle" factor. Usually this is presented in the context of engine failure, especially on takeoff. But this is also a factor in other conditions as well. The greater problem is we don't teach for the unexp...

Re: DA50 vs The World
I don’t think the gearbox main issue, rather the stall behavior. The Diamonds are all behaving a lot more predictable and robust in base-to-final turns. That’s unfortunately a very typical Cirrus accident  ( Check out the video in the link ) Yes, one notes that the landing gear was rather far ...

Re: DA50 vs The World
The primary design flaw in the Cirrus is the landing gear. The most common accident type is the application of power during a botched landing resulting in a left of runway excursion. It’s statistically significant. The trailing link gear is a big safety advantage in favor of the Diamond. Explain. T...

Nearby Bend airport (KBDN) is one of those mentioned and is currently at odds with virtually everyone based there over this and a num...

Re: Prop governor
I heard back from MT USA today. When they opened the prop there was zero grease inside. It was completely dry. The bearings were damaged. They found that a piece of one of the bearing races had broken off. They said they saw signs of heat damage. I'm not sure how this happened. The prop is 390 hrs ...

Re: Thoughts after 2 year of owning a DA40NG
The current MOSAIC proposal is expressed in Calculated Airspeed -- max VS1 of 54kt KCAS. The DA40-180 VS1 is expressed in Indicated airspeed -- VS1 of 53kt KIAS at 2646lb. At higher speeds the difference is very small but at lower speeds it appears to be much larger. Looking at the DA40-180 airspee...

Re: Thoughts after 2 year of owning a DA40NG
AOPA's Mark Baker thinks MOSAIC will improve costs. I don't think it will help much for solo owners like us. I don't see that. Basically the sport pilot certificate exists to escape medical exam requirements. FWIW, as currently written the DA40 wouldn't fall under these expanded limitations due to ...

To mute my radios I just hit the "COM 3" button on the audio panel.
