Re: Tire Damage

Its aquaplaning, or maybe you call it hydroplaning, locked wheel on standing water during the landing roll. That’s was my first thought. It still might be. But experienced pilot landed the plane on a dry runway. When I look closely I see where it looks like something has eaten away in an oval patte...

Re: Prop Damage

Static RPM is usually checked with the aircraft stationary. As the aircraft moves fwd the load on the prop blades changes as the airflow is at a different angle of attack. The only time you will get consistent readings is with the aircraft stationary and of course little or no wind. With the aircraf...

Re: Help!!! Prop Strike questions for a Diamond DA40

Context: - Prop hit an airport Pylon. - No visible damage on the prop. - Plane / prop visually inspected and flown immediately after incident without issue / observable changes in engine instruments. Note: Was not aware the lycomming AD and SB requirements relating to prop strikes until after the p...

Re: Governor

Thanks, Karl. Which SB? This aircraft and engines were a Fall 2021 delivery. MSB-E4-029. Reports of RPM fluctuations that were caused by pressure fluctuations in the Map system. Dampers are very easy to fit but also easy to get the wrong way around. It would be a good idea to highlight to whoever i...

Re: Governor

Recently I have been problems which are likely a prop governor. At a high load setting the load will quickly drop a few per cent then recover to the original value. In the process, the engine vibrates like crazy if only for 3 or 4 seconds. The following replay, compliments of Flysto, show what happ...

Re: Rear Door departs a DA40 after takeoff

To check it, open the door a few inches and move the latch lever, it should snap to both the open and closed position and be held there by the spring. If it is possible to leave the latch lever in any position the the spring is not doing its job and the latch could vibrate open during flight. I per...

Re: Lead weight in tail fin bulletin

Have done it a few times.
Largely depends on where the CG is now.
Its easy to do the SB but I would recommend doing a new CG so you know exactly where it is now. Then run up a spreadsheet so that you can change things around and work out what is the best adjustment and how much weight to add.

Re: Dormant for 30 days

Said Diamond switched vendors on the bolts with introduction of the DA50. If this turns out to be caused by somebody relaxing the specs trying to save a few bucks (euros) per engine, I hope whoever made that decision is no longer working for Austro. It seems more plausible to me that the specs didn...

Re: Rear Door departs a DA40 after takeoff

Further to my earlier comment about checking and lubricating the red button, it is also important to check the operation of the latch mechanism. The latch mechanism has an over-centre lock design utilizing a spring, older versions have a steel spring while newer versions have a gas strut. If the spr...
