Re: Flying Videos
Brian: Nice video -- I can see why radar is a necessity in that type of weather in Europe. We're so spoiled by having XM satellite weather here in the US, which combined with flying high to stay visual on the cells, lets us avoid most CBs. I still can't (and won't) reliably penetrate a solid line o...

Re: Flying Videos
I was, unfortunately, unable to see the on board radar on your video. Were you using a GoPro camera? If so, how were you able to get 30 minutes of video from one battery, or did you change batteries during flight? I am still trying to figure out how to optimally use my GoPro camera. GoPro, but the ...

Here's a vid of an IFR flight out of Kassel, Germany in convective weather. Highlights use of the GWX68 weather radar.

Re: IFR decisions... one more tale
No matter how many gizmos you put on your plane, the closer you get to the fire and the more often you play with it, the sooner you will get burned. Your brain used wisely will keep you out of trouble more often than any gizmo... Tommy, I don't want to argue with anyone; piloting is always a matter...

Re: IFR decisions... one more tale
Antoine, for reliable full-year IFR in Northern Europe, you really need 1) deice, 2) oxygen & 3) high performance engine and/or turbo/supercharger. A DA40 will never provide deice & is in fact fairly sensitive to icing compared to a lot of the old spamcans. Of course, it's a judgement call,...

Re: IFR decisions... one more tale
What would the 42 have offered you that the 40 could not or did not? Another thing the 42 offers is the GWX68 integrated weather radar. Would have been very useful to Antoine in this situation, of course. Confidence on where the embedded CBs actually are. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quH7VCvCEgc

Re: Grass Field Operations
Really interesting discussion with lots of good viewpoints and info. I just recently dropped off a friend on the island of Anholt (in the Kattegat between Denmark and Sweden) where they have a relatively short grass strip (650m/2100ft). We were two men and a woman. I had filled up all tanks (aux als...

Re: ECU FAIL
Another way to clear this is to manually switch to the failed ECU, then back to Auto. I've done this once. Perhaps less brutal than pulling the breaker, and no risk that you pull the wrong one.

Re: DA42-VI Weight Increase
I've understood that some VI owners have in practice been flight planning on 2000kg already. Don't think the announcement comes as much of a surprise. Of course, I don't know any of these owners myself....
