Re: Surprise Propeller Motion

The distinctive in the Pilot's Workshop example is that the prop turned when the master power was turned on. The ignition was off and the keys were out. I can see how that might occur in a very unusual situation but it seems that the malfunction would have had to occur before the engine was was shut...

Surprise Propeller Motion

Today's Pilot Workshop Tip of the Week discusses the following scenario: “One day a while ago, I jumped into my airplane for a quick local flight and was shocked when I turned on the master—and the prop started turning. I shut off the master right away. Fortunately, nothing—and more importantly no o...

Re: XLS or NG?

Rob - I am also an '08 XLS owner and was considering the purchase of a new 2024 NG, until yesterday. I decided just yesterday for a variety of reasons (see below) to keep my '08 XLS. I have over 1800 hours in my DA40 over the last 5.5 years and have been from Key West to Alaska and most everywhere ...

Re: XLS or NG?

This is a great overview of some things you’d want to know: https://hasslo.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/SE-MIO-Diamond-DA40-NG_-Handout_V5_2-6.pdf That's a great document. Is there a similar one for XLS? Or XLT? Agreed! Love to see one. Also it was interesting to see some of the minor but positiv...

Re: XLS or NG?

Thanks everyone. This is really helpful. I have an open mind, and the NG looks like a very refined machine but I'm leaning toward keeping my XLS at the moment. Over time, I the fine art of starting the IO-360 under various conditions, and engine management is now an automatic process that requires n...

XLS or NG?

I have a decent trade in offer to swap my 2008 XLS for a low time 2021 NG. I love my XLS but I have no knowledge of what I gain and lose (if anything). Setting aside the dollars and age, why would I be happier the NG and what, if anything would I miss? I will not fly either enough to compensate fina...

Re: Diamond Quality

Thanks Rich and Steve. I keep an eye on mine and report if I see anything unusual. No lube requirements so I guess the rollers are sealed. Sorry about the topic creep.

Re: Diamond Quality

The quality thing seems a well kept secret in some circles Steve. When I bought my hangar in the Phoenix east valley, I began looking for a new IA to develop a relationship with when I am in Arizona. I prefer to do most of my own mechanical work and have it checked by someone who has expertise in Di...

Diamond Quality

Many of us have commented on the quality of our Diamond from engineering, construction, fit and finish, or other quality perspectives. I have not been flying my 2008 XLS much in the past four years but am again spending time with it and have been working on upgrades. Yesterday, I was replacing my OE...
