Re: First non-commercial Crossing South Atlantic solo in a DA42

Totally right, Chris, but SBFN is not an international port. I used it though as alternate on my FPL, and would not have hesitated to land if I had doubts about my range, or any other issue. But since all went smooth, I had to fly over that island, and head all the way to Natal.

Re: Landing Grass

HyYf6m90ZZA See my video of landing in a small unlisted strip in Northern Haiti, been there several times. Landing is great, the challenge is the takeoff, combined grass-chopping props, bumpy surface, altitude and heat.... But fortunately almost 4,000 ft, time and length to call it off if not in so...

Re: DA62 Around the World

Hi, just saw the tread now... absolutely doable. I have done it in DA42, just 2 years ago (before the pandemic...). In N hemisphere summer, Bering and Greenland, possible without extra tanks. I crossed Atlantic via Azores, and Pacific from via NZ-Fiji-Christmas-Hawaii, there you need a bubble in the...

Re: DA62 - Personal ETOPS Discussion

Thanks, Dave, agree with you as always.... I have flown to Cozumel twice (once via KEYW, once direct from Nassau) using G765 which is one of the exempted E-W airways in Cuban airspace, no permit needed. But only IFR possible in Cuban airspace, no such thing as VFR flight following (and don't even th...

Re: Intentionally disabling the plane

Hi, I concur with Dave. I am based in Bahamas, and have landed at all 50 public airports over last 13 years, many times over night. No prop lock, never had an issue. And never heard any talk about that in pilot circles here. In Brazil I was told, they are interested in very standard planes (Cessnas,...

Re: DA62 - Personal ETOPS Discussion

One fuel line each side connects from rear seats center console through fuselage, wings and cowlings to the return fuel line which is in lower back of cowling. So, when you start pumping from the bladders, you see (similarly to Aux tanks transfer) that fuel temp goes down a couple of degrees. Southt...

Re: DA62 - Personal ETOPS Discussion

I own a 66G Turtle Pack bladder, and a small pump station, with 2 pumps (which can crossfeed if 1 pump ever failed), leading the fuel (ca 1G/min, similar capacity as the Aux pumps) into main return fuel line, in back of cowlings. That gives you about 140G useable, or about 9.7 hours plus Res. For th...

Re: Part 91 condition based maintenance in a DA42NG

One recommendation non-related to the questions you asked: be sure that the aircraft you buy has GFC700 autopilot. The aircraft I sell (sorry, maybe I am conflicted....) has KAP140 which I used on my around-the-world, 3 Atlantic crossings and more, and it does the job! I guess 99.9% of the time you...

Re: DA62 - Personal ETOPS Discussion

Hello, I did 12 hours in my DA42NG from Hawaii to California. I calculated that if one engine quit halfway (1000nm from land), I still could just about make it without swimming. I found no single eng cruise tables, and with the 2 minute rule for single eng op, no time to stabilize, trim plane, and g...

Re: Advice for a (soon to be) DA42-NG owner

Hello all, and in the meantime Michael reached me directly. My quick and general answers on Michael's good questions are: 1. On the RWT trip, I had 100hs services at LOAN Wr. Neustadt (turned around in 3 working days, incl. minor other issues, as all spare parts readily available across the road!), ...
