WAKE TURBULENCE- LANDING AT MIAMI
I flew from KFMY (Fort Myers FL.) to KMIA (Miami International) this past Tuesday. I had my GoPro and posted the enroute and landing part of the trip for your views. The enroute was uneventful but while on approach for 8L the tower gave me the "CAUTION WAKE TURBULENCE" from a departing 767 on runway 8R. While I was landing, there was definitely wake turbulence that I incurred but my issue is with the tower releasing the 767 while I was on short final. Any thoughts?? Would they have preferred me to go around??
Like usual my DA-42 handled excellent...
check it out at the end of the youtube video.

Greg, I couldn't see any turbulence in the video. What time exactly was it?

Greg - From the video, it looks like you had the unrestricted option to land north of the 767's rotation. I didn't see any turbulence either.

I hope you weren't listening to the 'Sports Radio' audio while in the terminal environment...

Re: WAKE TURBULENCE- LANDING AT MIAMI
The wake turbulence was not dramatic. My point of the post was the controller calling out caution wake turbulence on short final. Why not just wait 30 seconds more before you release the 767. I guess that is what you should expect flying into a very busy airport.
Also my GoPro plugs into the rear intercom so unfortunately I was not able to listen to the sports radio.

Also the arrival at KMIA was on Tuesday 3/17/15 at approximately 11:36am according to Flightaware.com

Re: WAKE TURBULENCE- LANDING AT MIAMI
This discussion got me to wondering. I just reviewed the regs and, as usual, they are not crystal clear with a casual read. Assuming separation was maintained, I could not find a more applicable reference. FAA WT ATC Training Aid 2.6.3.2 says 3 minutes separation of small behind heavy on same (or close parallel) runway. I did see reference to language that your advisory should have included the word "heavy."
When I receive wake turbulence advisories it seems to me that the heavy is either rumbling down the tarmac or rotated within the last 30 seconds. The advisories are always on short final.

Re: WAKE TURBULENCE- LANDING AT MIAMI
Nice video, but I don't think you encountered any wake. As far as them releasing the 767, ATC is not going to hold a 767 that has an IFR release time and is burning fuel through 3 turbine engines (can't forget the APU!) so that a light GA airplane can land. You flew into MIA... what do you expect?
To avoid the wake, you would want to be on the ground before the rotation point of the 767. If you were following a 767 on approach, then you would want to touchdown beyond where his nose gear touched.rwtucker wrote:Greg - From the video, it looks like you had the unrestricted option to land north of the 767's rotation.
